KADAVRIK: Grimm I & II

KadavriK is one of those German bands that are rather hard to put in one pigeonhole. Since we reviewed the predecessor ’N.O.A.H.’, the band has shared the stage with amongst others Graveworm and Napalm Death. Next they started working on their fourth studio album ‘Grimm I & II’. That turned into an atmospheric black/death metal album with innovative tinge and it shows any improvement compared to earlier works.
The five-piece has chosen the fairytales of the brothers Grimm as topic. Obviously not the ones that innocently made you fall asleep when you were a child, but the stories with a lugubrious touch in which the brother do justice to their (Grimm) name. That’s why the album is split (once again) in two parts. The first part is called ‘The Armless Maiden’ and it tells the story of a girl that conquers her childhood trauma by aiming for emancipation. The second part is called ‘Thoughts Of The Sore’ and pulverizes every romantic illusions.
Several spins are needed to fathom these mostly multilayered, chockfull songs. That is surely tenable for the first three songs. An eerie atmosphere wanders through the songs, increased by the creepy (blackish) vocals of guitarist Niklas Pietsch. The band has a nearer approach to black metal this time, although they never completely ignore their death metal roots. The first song ‘Wither Away’ gets slower and drawling halfway and includes an engrossing passage with fluttering solos contra tight riffs. ‘All The World But One’ starts with lovely plucking guitars and is epic and mysterious, while the opulence of melodic leads in the background deserve a special mention here. Yet the band sometimes makes strange twists and turns in their music, so that the technical skilful exposure in ‘Ruins’ comes close to chaos. There are lots of tempo shifts and sometimes it has a bit of an avant-garde flavour. Now and then the songs are regaled with extra orchestration, also horns loom up. And then everything is seduced to the essence in the instrumental, atmospheric ‘7 Years’. There’s much distortion on guitars, but it is a beautiful track. Also ‘Queen Of Sylvan Lands’ has interesting parts with a-typical guitar sound in the leads and dramatic piano/keyboards. Every song offers us a wide range of different moods and sounds and even though it is too early to speak of a stunner, KadavriK surely has the potential – also on stage so it seems – to challenge the German bands of their ilk. In that case we think of bands like Nocte Obducta, Vyre, Obscurity and Eden Weint Im Grab although they are not (yet) at the same high level.

KadavriK is één van die Duitse bands die niet voor één gat te vangen zijn. Sinds we voorganger ’N.O.A.H.’ besproken hadden heeft de band het podium gedeeld met o.a. Graveworm en Napalm Death en begon vervolgens te werken aan hun vierde studioalbum ‘Grimm I & II’. Dat is een atmosferisch black/death metal album geworden met innovatieve trekjes dat enige vooruitgang vertoont in vergelijking met voorgaande werkjes.
Als thema dook het vijftal in de sprookjes van de gebroeders Grimm. Niet deze die je onschuldig in slaap wiegen tijdens de kindertijd, maar de verhalen met een luguber trekje waar de gebroeders hun achternaam alle eer aandoen. Vandaar dat het album (weer) in twee delen gesplitst is. Het eerste deel heet ‘The Armless Maiden’ en verhaalt over een meisje dat de jeugdtrauma’s overwint door emancipatie na te streven. Het tweede deel heet ‘Thoughts Of The Sore’ en maakt rigoureus komaf met alle romantische illusies.
Meerdere luisterbeurten zijn nodig om de veelal volgepropte songs tot hun recht te laten komen. Dat geldt zeker al voor de eerste drie songs. Er hangt een griezelige sfeer, aangedikt door de knekelvocalen van gitarist Niklas Pietsch. De band schurkt dichter aan bij black metal, al blijven ook de death roots merkbaar. Het eerste nummer ‘Wither Away’ wordt halverwege slepend en kent een boeiende passage met uitwaaierende solo’s en stugge riffs. ‘All The World But One’ begint met een lieflijke tokkel en is episch en geheimzinnig, terwijl hier de vele melodieuze leads in de achtergrond een speciale vermelding krijgen. Toch blijft de band ook wel rare bokkensprongen nemen, zodat het geëtaleerde technische vernuft in ‘Ruins’ soms wat chaotisch dreigt te worden. De tempowisselingen zijn legio en een avant-garde sfeer is voelbaar. Af en toe is er orkestratie, ook blazers duiken wel eens op. En dan wordt alles tot de naakte essentie herleid in het instrumentale, atmosferische ‘7 Years’. Op de gitaren staat een hoop vervorming, maar het is een mooi nummer. Ook ‘Queen Of Sylvan Lands’ heeft interessante stukken met atypische gitaarsound in de leads en dramatische piano/keyboards. Zo weet elke song ons een keur aan differentiële stukken te bieden en ook al is gejuich nog een beetje te hoog gegrepen, toch heeft KadavriK potentieel genoeg om zich (ook op het podium blijkbaar) te meten met soortgenoten in de Duitse scène. We denken dan ook aan bands als Nocte Obducta, Vyre, Obscurity en Eden Weint Im Grab al staan ze (nog) niet op hetzelfde hoog niveau.
