JADED STAR: Memories From The Future

Singer Maxi Nil sings also in On Thorns I Lay, but is probably better known from Visions Of Atlantis, where she must have met Babis and Raphael (ex-Iced Earth), since they both were in the live line-up. From fragile to sturdy hard rock vocals, Maxi proves here again that her voice has a wide and accurate range. Fact is, Maxi and Raphael decided to start something together and here is the first power album of Jaded Star.
In a teaser on YouTube, I found the origins of their name. After an apocalypse that ruined Earth, the quartet merges and flees into outer space to wait for the right moment to take revenge. Now that time has come and we see a kind of comet shooting into our atmosphere … the Jaded Star. Hence I came to expect a concept album, but it didn’t turn out that way.
It turned out as powerful symphonic / electro metal with occasional gothic feel (e.g. the melancholic keyboard intro of ‘Keep On Fighting’ or the break with keyboards in ‘Raining’). At ‘End Of Time’ I thought a bit of Evanescence and in ‘You’ll See’ there’s a piece reminding of Within Temptation, but always with great guitar, solid drums and very convincing Maxi. The acoustic ‘In Memory’ has an intro that’s way too long and isn’t varied enough, moreover, it’s the only song where Maxi’s accent struck me.
Strong slab of symphonic power with gothic feel.

Zangeres Maxi Nil zingt ook bij On Thorns I Lay, maar is allicht het meest bekend van Visions Of Atlantis waar ze waarschijnlijk Babis en Raphael (ex-Iced Earth) leerde kennen die ooit in de live bezetting van die band zaten. Van fragiel tot stevige hardrock stem bewijst Maxi hier weer eens dat haar stem een wijd en trefzeker bereik heeft. Feit is, Maxi en Raphael besloten samen iets te doen en hier is het eerste album van power Jaded Star.

Na een ramp die de Aarde verwoest achterliet, versmelt het viertal en vlucht naar de ruimte om daar wachten op het juiste moment om wraak te nemen. Die tijd is nu gekomen en we zien een soort komeet onze dampkring binnenschieten … de Jaded Star. Hierdoor verwachtte ik eigenlijk een conceptalbum, maar dat is het niet geworden.
Het werd knallende symfo/electro metal die bij vlagen zelfs gothic voelt (bv. de melancholische keyboard intro van ‘Keep On Fighting’ of de toetsenbreak in ‘Raining’). Bij ‘End Of Time’ dacht ik even aan Evanescence en in ‘You’ll See’ zit een stuk dat me aan Within Temptation deed denken, maar steeds met heerlijke gitaar, stevige drums en uithangbord Maxi. Het akoestische ‘In Memory’ heeft een véél te lange intro en is niet genoeg gevarieerd, het is ook het enige nummer waarin Maxi’s accent storend is.
Sterke symfo power met gothic inslag.
