STORMLORD: Mare Nostrum (re-release)

Trollzorn now releases a deluxe reissue of ‘Mare Nostrum’, the fourth album of Italian Stormlord that was originally released in May 2008. Five bonus tracks are added: four demo versions and the title track live on the radio in 2014. The demo versions are recorded in 2007 for labels only and previously unreleased. I still have the early works ‘Supreme Art Of War’ and the MCD ‘The Curse Of Medusa’ of Stormlord in my collection: snappy, lively black metal with a symphonic tinge. The Italian band signed a contract with Scarlet Records next and travelled the globe to promote the next albums ‘At The Gates Of Utopia’ and ‘The Gorgon Cult’ (2004). It even brought them in Canada in 2006; later the DVD ‘The Battle Of Quebec City: Live In Canada 2006’ appeared to be the crown on seventeen years of hard work and the farewell to Scarlet Records.
Stormlord is back now with a new album ‘Mare Nostrum’ and they embarked with Locomotive Records. This new album slightly returns to the sound of the early days, but of course everything sounds better due to experience for years. The in 1991 in Rome founded band could finalize the complexity of the multilayered, stuffed new material to the max at the renowned Outer Sound Studios of Novembre in the Italian capital. It is epic, highfaluting black metal with classical arrangements and cinematic fragments. Opening track, the title track ‘Mare Nostrum’ is truly overwhelming. Inciting black metal parts are alternated with calmer passages when we even hear a mouth harp and operatic chants. One may even perceive any pagan influences, due to the victorious nature of some of the songs, but the theme of the Mediterranean Sea has a kind of pugnacious tinge anyhow.
Vocals of Cristiano Borchi are full of diversity: mostly black-ish, but also a dark, narrative voice can often be heard (think about the sublime Moonspell). In addition he gets some help of Gianpaolo Caprino for clean vocals; he especially does a great job in the for Stormlord very unusual semi-acoustic ‘The Castaway’. The songs themselves are very varied as well. ‘Neon Karma’ is catchy gothic metal, ‘Legacy Of The Snake’ is brimming with oriental influences (even a sitar) and ‘Scorn’ is a sample of true black metal fury. Other highlights are the epic stunners and then I think about the compelling ‘And The Wind Shall Scream My Name’ and the larger-then-life mid-paced ‘Stormlord’ anthem as tips to listen to. This is a strong album of a band which has been around for years! Still explosive!

Trollzorn brengt nu een deluxe heruitgave op de markt van ‘Mare Nostrum’, het vierde album van het Italiaanse Stormlord, oorspronkelijk uitgebracht in mei 2008. Vijf bonus tracks werden toegevoegd: vier demo versies en het titelnummer in een live uitvoering op de radio in 2014. De demoversies zijn opgenomen in 2007 en destijds enkel uitgezonden naar labels. De Italiaanse band tekende daarna een contract met Scarlet Records en reisde de wereld rond om de volgende albums ‘At The Gates Of Utopia’ en ‘The Gorgon Cult’ (2004) te promoten. Dit nieuwe album keert wat terug naar het geluid van de begindagen, maar natuurlijk klinkt door jaren ervaring alles stukken beter. De in 1991 in Rome opgerichte band kon het volgepropte geluid van het nieuwe materiaal volledig tot haar recht laten komen in de gerenommeerde Outer Sound Studios van Novembre in de Italiaanse hoofdstad. Het is epische, bombastische black metal met klassieke arrangementen en filmische fragmenten. Opener, de titeltrack ‘Mare Nostrum’ is overweldigend. Ophitsende black metal stukken worden afgewisseld met kalmere passages waar we zelfs een mondharp en operazang horen. Door het victorieuze karakter van sommige nummers ontwaart men zelfs enige pagan invloeden, maar het thema van de Middellandse Zee heeft sowieso een strijdvaardig karakter.
De zang van Cristiano Borchi is erg gevarieerd: black-ish meestal, maar ook een donkere, lage vertelstem komt veel voor (denk aan het sublieme Moonspell). Bovendien wordt hij voor cleane zang geholpen door Gianpaolo Caprino die vooral in het voor Stormlord ongebruikelijke semi-akoestische ‘The Castaway’ een goede beurt maakt. Ook de nummers onderling bieden veel afwisseling. Zo is ‘Neon Karma’ vlotte gothic metal, staat ‘Legacy Of The Snake’ bol van de oosterse invloeden (zelfs een sitar) en is ‘Scorn’ een staaltje van onvervalste black furie. Andere hoogtepunten zijn de epische krakers en dan geef ik vooral het meeslepende ‘And The Wind Shall Scream My Name’ en het groots opgevatte, mediumtempo ‘Stormlord’ als tips om te beluisteren. Een sterk album van een band die al heel wat jaartjes meegaat! Nog steeds explosief!
