‘Their sound could only have been born and bred in the South of France’, that’s what the promo sheet tells us. So that must be a sunny, relaxed sound with beaches, bikini’s, cocktails and wine in sight … Not!!! Dagoba is a sophisticated extreme metal band from Marseille (city of crime ???) releasing their sixth album and touring Europe with Moonspell in the fall of 2015. Their music is a fusion of speed, death, black, progressive, melodic and industrial metal, full of controlled aggression, grunt (but also clean) vocals and stomach punching rawness. Not the type of metal that enlightens yours truly, but this time these Frenchmen manage to hold my attention, because their music is so sophisticated and full of twists and moves that it keeps the record interesting throughout.

‘Hun sound kan enkel geboren en ontwikkeld zijn in het zuiden van Frankrijk’, dat is wat het promo verhaal ons vertelt. Wie denkt het vooruitzicht aan stranden, bi- of monokini’s, wijn en cocktails wordt daarmee grondig op het verkeerde been gezet. Dagoba is een beenharde extreme metalband afkomstig uit Marseille (stad van de misdaad ???) die met ‘Tales Of The Black Dawn’ hun zesde plaat de wereld in sturen en in de herfst van 2015 in Europa gaan toeren met Moonspell. Hun muziek is een fusie van speed, black, death, progressieve, melodieuze en industriële metal, staat bol van de gecontroleerde agressie met grunts (maar ook zuivere vocalen) die je een stomp in de maag bezorgen. Niet het soort metal waar ondergetekende wild van wordt, maar deze Fransen weten toch mijn aandacht vast te houden. Dat komt omdat hun muziek zo gesofistikeerd is en vol zit van wendingen en bewegingen die de plaat interessant maken tot op het einde.
