KONTINUUM: Kyrr

In 2012 we were truly impressed by the debut album ‘Earth Blood Magic’ of Kontinuum. It was no coincidence that this happened to be another Icelandic band that came up with such magnificent mind-blowing music with roots in black metal. But this verged more to post rock and the comparison with Solstafir was inevitable. When you read the review of that debut here, we recognize many elements of three years ago, yet the band has taken quite a giant leap in between both albums.
On ‘Kyrr’ black metal influences are totally vanished. Now Birgir Thorgeirsson sings with clean, slightly velvet voice, but fortunately melancholy is still omnipresent in the songs. The distorted plucking guitars and new wave bass (The Cure) in opener ‘Breathe’ sounds very familiar. One can even pigeonhole this as catchy rock, with heavy sharp guitars in U2 style and a fetching chorus. The band gathered loads of praise with the debut, international as well. But the single ‘I Huldusal’ – already released in Iceland in 2014 – instantly topped the charts in their home country. ‘We will do the ‘Fjara’ trick’, that’s what they probably thought. Indeed, it is more polished than we expected. On the other hand one can find really enchanting wonderful music on ‘Kyrr’, just listen to the stunner ‘Hliðargötu-Heimsveldi’. This is music to enjoy with eyes closed! Songs that smoothly rock (‘Kyrr’ and ‘In Shadow Seas’ with its dark new wave voice and bewitching ebow echoes) are intermittent with more spatial moments that have absolutely mind-blowing and trance-inducing qualities. In addition the band adds in ‘Red Stream’ exactly those psychedelic sounds that are anything but your everyday stuff. Thus a fusion between authenticity and more accessibility has taken place on ‘Kyrr’ and it depends on personal taste whether this is a pro or a con. We miss the heavy, rough backbone a little bit, but pushed the repeat button spontaneously when the last note had faded away.

In 2012 waren we zwaar onder de indruk van het debuutalbum ‘Earth Blood Magic’ van Kontinuum. Het was geen toeval dat dit alweer een IJslandse band was die zulk een prachtige uitwaaierende muziek maakte met roots in black metal. Maar dit neigde toch meer naar post-rock en de vergelijking met Solstafir was onvermijdelijk. Wanneer je de bespreking van dat debuut hier leest, dan herkennen we nog veel van die elementen, maar de band heeft toch wel een grote stap gemaakt tussen beide albums.
Op ‘Kyrr’ zijn de black metal invloeden helemaal verdwenen. Er wordt nu met heldere, licht omfloerste en klare stem gezongen door Birgir Thorgeirsson, maar gelukkig is de weemoed nog alom vertegenwoordigd in de songs. Heel herkenbaar is de vervormde tokkel en new wave bas (The Cure) in opener ‘Breathe’. We kunnen dit zelfs luchtig rockend noemen, met scheurende U2 gitaren en aanstekelijk refrein. De band heeft ontzettend veel lof geoogst met het debuut, ook internationaal. Maar de single ‘I Huldusal’ die in 2014 al in IJsland werd uitgebracht haalde vlotjes de top van de vaderlandse hitlijsten. ‘We zullen eens een Fjara’tje doen,’ zal men gedacht hebben. Ja, het is gepolijster dan we verwachtten. Maar er staat heus nog wel betoverend mooie muziek op ‘Kyrr’, met bijvoorbeeld de pracht van een song ‘Hliðargötu-Heimsveldi’. Muziek om met gesloten ogen van te genieten. Zo worden songs die flink rocken (‘Kyrr’ en het met donkere new wave stem gezongen ‘In Shadow Seas’ met verrukkelijk ebow geluiden) afgewisseld met meer ruimtelijke momenten die telkens geestverruimende kwaliteiten hebben. Bovendien voegt de band in ‘Red Stream’ net die psychedelische klanken toe die allerminst alledaags te noemen zijn. Een fusie tussen authenticiteit en meer toegankelijkheid heeft dus plaats gevonden op ‘Kyrr’ en het hangt van je persoonlijke smaak af of dit een pro of contra is. Wij missen de harde, ruwe bast wel een beetje, maar duwden spontaan op 'repeat' nadat de laatste noot was weggestorven.
