KEN HENSLEY: Blood On The Highway

When talking about the origin of hardrock/metal, Uriah Heep is one of the most influential bands we cannot ignore. Together with Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin they were “accused†– the press was not that enthusiastic – of making extremely heavy music for that time. The rebellious young rockfan did not give a damn about these critics and the popularity of Uriah Heep grew to immense proportions, while the band travelled the whole globe living the rock ‘n’ roll way of life with infamous excesses.
Ken Hensley, keyboardist, guitarist and a pretty good vocalist as well, was the main composer of the notorious outfit of Birmingham. Look it up and read the credits of classic songs like ‘Gypsy’, ‘Easy Livin’’, July Morning’, ‘Sunrise’ or ‘Return To Fantasy’. Ken left Uriah Heep in the early eighties and made a number of solo albums with a more introvert character. He was Blackfoot’s keyboard player for a few years. Then he disappeared out of the spotlights for a decade. Until he returned to the scene in the nineties and later; with albums such as ‘Running Blind’ and ‘The Last Dance’ as eternal witnesses.
Why such a long introduction of a musician everybody should know? Because exactly his turbulent life is the theme of his newest album ‘Blood On The Highway’. He wrote his biography earlier, but now this is transferred into twelve songs (and two short intermezzos) that all describe a certain period of his exciting life as musician. The difference with previous albums is that Ken engaged some eminent vocalists of the rock world to interpret his compositions. Ken himself sings on four tracks.
The majority of vocals is selected for Jorn Lande. Of course he feels like a fish in the water executing these classic rock songs. Melancholy and catchiness are featured in these first tracks, with title track ‘Blood On The Highway’ as my personal favourite, due to its dark atmosphere and beautiful slide guitar. ‘You’ve Got It’ could be found on ‘Running Blind’ in a different, slower version. John Lawton, who used to be Uriah Heep’s vocalist in the ‘Firefly’ era, does a great job on ‘It Won’t Last’, while the vocal performance of Glenn Hughes on ‘What You Gonna Do’ immediately invokes his soulful, nearly nightclub character. Eve Gallagher moves me in the sensitive ‘Think Twice’. It is an album full of nostalgia. This is most of all showcased during the quiescent songs, sung by Ken. In the last songs we hear the Alicante Symphony Orchestra – Hensley lives in Spain now – so that the album occludes with proper grandeur with the eight minutes long ‘The Last Dance’. Being a Uriah Heep fan, it is very fetching to follow the eventful, yet recognizable lyrics; but also fans of AOR and classic rock will enjoy this musical biography of a man who – as no other – introduced keyboards and Hammond organ in the heavy rock music.

Wanneer we spreken over het ontstaan van hardrock/metal, is Uriah Heep één van de invloedrijkste bands geweest waar we niet omheen kunnen. Samen met Black Sabbath, Deep Purple en Led Zeppelin werden zij begin jaren zeventig “beticht†– de pers was allerminst lovend – van het maken van voor die tijd loeiharde muziek. Het kon de rebelse, jeugdige rockfan geen zier schelen wat die kritieken waren, want de populariteit van Uriah Heep nam immense vormen aan, zodat de band zowat de halve aardbol rondreisde met alle rock ‘n’ roll excessen die daarbij hoorden.
Ken Hensley, toetsenist, gitarist en ook geen onverdienstelijke zanger, was de voornaamste componist van de beruchte band uit Birmingham. Lees er de credits van klassiekers als ‘Gypsy’, ‘Easy Livin’’, ‘July Morning’, ‘Sunrise’ of ‘Return To Fantasy’ maar eens op na. Ken verliet Uriah Heep in 1980 en maakte een aantal soloalbums met een meer ingetogen karakter. Ook was hij enkele jaren toetsenist in Blackfoot. Vervolgens verdween hij een decade uit de schijnwerpers. Tot hij in de jaren negentig en later terug de smaak te pakken kreeg; met albums als ‘Running Blind’ en ‘The Last Dance’ als eeuwige getuigen.
Waarom zulk een lange introductie over een muzikant die als algemeen bekend beschouwd mag worden? Omdat dit turbulente leven nou net het onderwerp is van zijn nieuwste plaat ‘Blood On The Highway’. Hij schreef al eerder zijn biografie, maar nu is dit ook omgezet in een twaalftal nummers (en twee korte intermezzo’s) die elk een bepaalde periode uit zijn boeiend leven als muzikant beschrijven. Anders dan op vorige albums trok Ken een aantal eminente zangers uit de rockwereld aan om zijn composities te vertolken. Hij zingt zelf op vier nummers.
Het grootste deel is weggelegd voor Jorn Lande, die zich als een vis in het water voelt in deze klassieke rocknummers. Melancholie en toegankelijkheid tekenen die eerste nummers, waarbij titelsong ‘Blood On The Highway’ door zijn donker karakter en mooie slide gitaar bij mij als favoriet uit de bus komt. ‘You’ve Got It’ stond al eerder, in een andere, tragere versie, op ‘Running Blind’. John Lawton die Uriah Heep’s zanger was ten tijde van ‘Firefly’ doet een knappe prestatie op ‘It Won’t Last’, terwijl het door Glenn Hughes gezongen ‘What You Gonna Do’ meteen diens soulvol nachtclubkarakter heeft. Eve Gallagher schittert in het ingetogen ‘Think Twice’. Het is een album vol nostalgie. Dit komt helemaal tot uiting in de rustige nummers die Ken zingt. In de laatste nummers horen we ook het Alicante Symphony Orchestra – Hensley woont nu in Spanje – zodat het album met enige grandeur eindigt met het acht minuten durende ‘The Last Dance’. Als Uriah Heep fan is het erg pakkend om de veelbetekenende en herkenbare teksten te volgen, maar ook fans van AOR en classic rock zullen genieten van het levensverhaal van de man die als geen ander toetsen en Hammond orgel in de hardere rockmuziek zijn plaats gaf.
