MORGLBL: Tea Time For Punks

Normally I don’t rely entirely on the description a label gives in the biography of a band, but here I can’t find a word that’s exaggerated. So: this French trio is known for its bizarre musical concoctions, their madcap jazz/jam metal fusion, virtually void of vocals. In their eighteenth year together they deliver their sixth album and … be prepared for a dose of weird ‘songs’! Even the recording procedure is strange: each instrument was recorded in a different studio.
The cover, together with the song title ‘God Shaved The Queen’ – only one from many weird ones - are a clear reference to the Sex Pistols, though there’s not a shred of punk in the music.
The disc opens with thumping metal, virtuoso soloing, but also a funny theme. ‘Rood’ with eerie keyboard alternated with sturdy, virtuoso or melodic guitar parts is more complex and more diversely structured. The title track begins rather calm and turns into something like fast swing jazz metal. With guitar reminding of Satriani, ‘Chinese Buffet’ is also pretty calm with a royal helping of guitar solos. ‘Mariachi’ is Zappa-funny – somebody says to sing a song for his beloved, but she apparently doesn’t appreciate it, so later he repeats the message babbling (a grieving drunk?) and the song comes with more conviction - punctuated with jazzy patches, virtuoso guitar again and a southern melody. Furthermore I found some funk, dance or trumpet and so on … I hope this helped you to get the picture.
For fans of complex music, but certainly for guitar aficionados too. These guys let their artistic freedom more than running wild!

Meestal ga ik voorbij aan de beschrijving die het platenlabel in de bio ten beste geeft voor een band, maar hier vind ik geen woord dat niet op zijn plaats is. Dus: dit Franse trio is bekend om zijn bizarre muzikale brouwsels, hun eigenzinnige jazz/jam metal fusion, virtueel gespeend van zang. In hun achttiende jaar samen komen ze met hun zesde album en… bereidt u voor op een dosis vreemde ‘nummers’! Zelfs het opname proces is merkwaardig: de drie instrumenten werden in drie verschillende studio’s opgenomen.
De hoes, samen met de songtitel ‘God Shaved The Queen’ – één uit vele rare hersenspinsels - verwijzen duidelijk naar de Sex Pistols, hoewel er muzikaal geen flard punk te horen is.
De schijf opent met dreunende metal, virtuoze gesoleer, maar ook een grappig gepingeld kenwijsje. ‘Rood’ met ijle keyboard afgewisseld met stevig, virtuoos of melodieuze gitaarstukken is complexer en meer divers in opbouw. Het titelnummer begint eerder rustig en wordt iets dat ik als snel swingende jazz metal zou omschrijven. Met gitaarwerk dat aan Satriani denken doet is ‘Chinese Buffet’ een kalmer nummer met royaal gesoleer.
‘Mariachi’ is Zappa-grappig - iemand zegt een liedje te gaan zingen voor zijn geliefde, maar dat wordt blijkbaar niet gunstig onthaald, dus herneemt hij die boodschap later lallend (zich bezat van verdriet?) en het liedje komt er met meer overtuiging – doorspekt met jazzy stukken, wéér virtuoze gitaar en een zuiders melodietje. Verder vind ik nog stukken funk, dance of trompet en zo gaat het verder… ik hoop dat u hiermee een beeld hebt van wat gewrocht werd.
Voor liefhebbers van complexe muziek, maar zeker ook voor gitaar aficionados.
Deze kerels lieten hun artistieke vrijheid meer dan de vrije loop!
