TIM BOWNESS: Stupid Things That Mean The World

Tim Bowness is a sophisticated English musician who is mainly known as long time buddy of Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) in No-Man and he also worked together with Richard Barbieri (album ‘Flame’ in 1994) and OSI (album ‘Blood’ in 2009) to name just a few. As successor of ’Abandoned Dancehall Dreams’ he now releases his third solo album, called ‘Stupid Things That Mean The World’. He could lean on a helping hand of several coryphées from the progressive rock world. It is mixed by Bruce Soord, mastered by Steve Kitch (Audiomaster UK) and includes contributions of Peter Hammill (VDGG), Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music), Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson) and the live band of No-Man, while he gives us insight in a next piece of work that features art rock and singer-songwriter flavours as main musical approach.
This English gentleman looses himself in a genuine way in melancholic, thoughtful reveries with a critical point of view on life, although one can always find a kind of reserved approach which might obviously be rather typical for the English way of looking at things. That does not leap to the eye so frankly in opener ‘The Great Electric Teenage Dream’ that plays smoothly with momentum, but next it becomes really quiet, with Bowness as contemplative painter of life sketches. One might even consider the title track as an accessible pop melody and ‘Know That You Were Loved’ is even that relaxed that it nearly gets boring. Yet you finally discover the charms in the man’s compositions when you know that Tim was inspired by working in a rest home for elder people when writing this kind of diary fragment. That’s the way we globally may consider this album: fragments of life you will have a connection with or not. He calls ‘Press Reset’ experimental electro rock, I’d rather label it as quiescent music with an ambient flavour. It appears to be one of the better tracks.
Of course we were eager to find out what has become of a studio visit at Peter Hammill’s place. It is rather a disillusion. The backing vocals of the VDGG front man are so mellifluent that you slip away into eternity (‘Everything You’re Not’ and ‘Everything But You’), surely nothing special. When we arrive at ‘Soft William’ we cannot resist a pun by thinking ‘Soft Tim’. Next we peacefully close our eyes to undergo the classical music tinge and organ solo of ‘At The End Of The Holiday’. These lyrics might appeal to many of you. There’s a kind of melancholy in it that captivates you. When you want to fall into oblivion, far from the madding crowd, on the tunes of this contemplative, quiescent music, you are at the right address with this very polished, sleek artist. I would not call it innovative or progressive, just decent easy listening music. But that might have its charms and beauty as well…

Tim Bowness is een gesofistikeerde Engelse muzikant die eerder met No-Man furore maakte als long time buddy van Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) en ook o.a. met Richard Barbieri samenwerkte (album ‘Flame’ in 1994) en OSI (album ‘Blood’ in 2009). Als de opvolger van ’Abandoned Dancehall Dreams’ brengt hij nu zijn derde soloalbum uit, namelijk ‘Stupid Things That Mean The World’ waarop hij prat kan gaan op de hulp van tal van coryfeeën uit de progressieve rock wereld. Gemixt door Bruce Soord, gemastered door Steve Kitch (Audiomaster UK) en met bijdragen van Peter Hammill (VDGG), Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music), Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson) en de live band van No-Man biedt hij ons inzage in een volgend werkstuk dat art rock en singer-songwriter als muzikale leidraad heeft.
De Engelse gentleman met zijn kritisch oog voor het leven laat zich volledig gaan in weemoedige, beschouwende vaststellingen, al blijft er muzikaal telkens een zekere gereserveerdheid merkbaar, wat trouwens typisch is voor een uitermate Engelse stijl en benadering. Dat valt nog niet zozeer op tijdens openingstrack ‘The Great Electric Teenage Dream’ dat de nodige spanningsbogen inbouwt, maar daarna wordt het toch wel heel rustig, met Bowness als beschouwende schilder van het leven. Het titelnummer kan men zelfs een toegankelijke popmelodie toedichten en ‘Know That You Were Loved’ is zelfs zo relaxed dat verveling dreigt toe te slaan. Toch ga je de charme ontdekken in ’s mans composities wanneer je bijvoorbeeld in ogenschouw neemt dat werken in een rusthuis Tim inspireerde tot dit dagboekfragment. Want zo mogen we deze plaat beschouwen: een greep uit het leven waarin men zich terugvindt of niet. Zelf noemt hij ‘Press Reset’ experimentele electro rock, ik hou het eerder bij verstilde muziek met wat ambient invloeden. Dit is wel één van de beste songs.
Natuurlijk waren we erg benieuwd wat een bezoek aan de studio van Peter Hammill opgebracht heeft. Dat valt nogal tegen. De achtergrondzang van het VDGG boegbeeld is zo honingzoet dat je erop uitglijdt (‘Everything You’re Not’ en ‘Everything But You’). Wanneer we bij ‘Soft William’ aanbeland zijn kunnen we de woordspeling ‘Soft Tim’ niet laten liggen en sluiten we vredig de ogen om de klassieke muziek en orgelsolo in ‘At The End Of The Holiday’ tot ons te nemen. Deze tekst zal menigeen aanspreken. Er zit ook een stuk weemoed in die beklijft. Wanneer je even de vergetelheid wilt inglijden op de tonen van beschouwende, verstilde muziek dan ben je aan het goede adres bij deze zeer gepolijste artiest. Vooruitstrevend of progressief zou ik dit echter niet noemen, eerder beschaafde luistermuziek. Maar dat kan ook mooi zijn natuurlijk…
