VESANIA: Distractive Killusions

It is no coincidence that I hear influences of Behemoth and Vader on this excellent third album of the Polish band Vesania. Vocalist/guitarist Orion also plays in Behemoth and drummer Daray took the place of the woeful deceased Doc behind the drums in Vader. Yet Vesania has been around much longer than its members joining these famous Polish bands, for Orion and Daray founded Vesania in 1997 (together with bassist Heinrich).
It turned into a successful enterprise. After every album they intensively toured and Vesania appeared several times at the huge Polish Metalmania festival. Indeed, you hear a very technical skilled band, playing tight and virtuoso and they relish their black metal assault with massive orchestral arrangements, lots of keyboards and from time to time even an atmospheric ambient excerpt.
Every album was recorded in a different studio. This time they entered the X Studio in Olsztyn under the guidance of Szymon Czech. In 2006 the release of ‘God The Lux’ was followed by a large amount of gigs and since then guitarist Valeo joined the band as permanent member. ‘Narrenschyff’ is interlarded with laughter of a madman, so it seems. ‘Rage Of Reason’ is a standout track. This one is sung a bit less extreme, a bit more melodic, guitar soloing even includes some progressive acrobatics. After a vehement guitar solo, vocals are distorted and a compelling part brimming with technical bravura follows, passing into a symphonic laden outro. This is a song that instantly blew me away! It is no wonder that it will be released as single on the 15th of January. Those who listen carefully will hear much more than just a rigorous portion black metal on ‘Distractive Killusions’. Mark the ambient part in ‘Silence Makes Noise’ or the delicious layers of classical piano in ‘Aesthesis’. This is highly commended to fans of Dimmu Borgir, Emperor and symphonic black metal in general.

Het is geen toeval dat ik invloeden van Behemoth en Vader hoor in deze uitstekende derde cd van het Poolse Vesania. Zanger/gitarist Orion speelt namelijk ook in Behemoth en drummer Daray nam de plaats van de helaas overleden Doc in achter de drumkit van Vader. Toch bestaat Vesania al heel wat langer dan dat de muzikanten bijklusten in deze populaire Poolse bands, want juist zij beiden (en bassist Heinrich) richtten in 1997 Vesania op.
Het werd een succesvolle onderneming, want na elk album werd intensief getoerd en Vesania trad al meermaals op tijdens het grootste Poolse Metalmania festival. Je hoort dan ook een technisch uit de kluiten gewassen band die retestrak speelt en de overdonderende black metal kruidt met grandioze orkestrale arrangementen, veel toetsen en af en toe zelfs atmosferische ambient passages.
Elk album is opgenomen in een andere studio. Ditmaal bezetten ze de X Studio in Olsztyn onder de productionele leiding van Szymon Czech. In 2006 werd de release van ‘God The Lux’ gevolgd door een groot aantal concerten en sindsdien is gitarist Valeo ingelijfd als permanent lid. ‘Narrenschyff’ wordt doorspekt met de lach van een waanzinnige, zo lijkt het wel. ‘Rage Of Reason’ is een wereldnummer. Dit is iets minder extreem gezongen, wat melodieuzer en ja, het gitaarwerk is zelfs niet gespeend van enige progressieve acrobatie. Na een heftige solo is er stemvervorming en een slepend stuk dat vol technische bravoure overgaat in de simfonisch geladen toetsen outro. Een nummer dat me meteen imponeerde! Laat dit nou net de single zijn die op 15 januari uitkomt! Wie aandachtig luistert hoort echter veel meer dan een gedreven portie black metal op ‘Distractive Killusions’. Let op het ambient stuk in ‘Silence Makes Noise’ of de prachtige ondersteuning van klassieke piano in ‘Aesthesis’. Dit is warm aanbevolen voor fans van Dimmu Borgir, Emperor en simfonische black metal in het algemeen.
