ANGELLORE: La Litanie Des Cendres

About two years ago we were deeply impressed by the amazing debut album ’Errances’ of the French doom/death/gothic metal band Angellore. Fortunately we were not the only one to make fuzz about it, since a track like ‘I Am The Agony’ smoothly gathered 14.000 views on YouTube and the talent of the young band spread like a fire among press and the aficionados of the genre. Angellore happens to be the embodiment of atmospheric doom/death with gothic overtones, while influences of Draconian, Saturnus and Empyrium are mould into a personal signature manifest of sounds.
They have been working long and hard on this successor ‘La Litanie Des Cendres’ that will be released late August by new label Shunu Records. This artistic work instantly leaps to the eye due to its refined, enchanting presentation which deserves a first mention. Florent Castellani has turned it into a piece of art you can unfold with cards with the lyrics and images and baroque statues. It instantly creates the right mood and atmosphere. Didn’t those statues and the use of violins already reminded us of the beauty of Prague in former times? Well, this time they catch the misty, dark mood of the entire work even more striking.
Musically this emotive project of moving spirits Walran and Rosarius (with help of drummer Ronnie) has developed as well. Even when working with the same team as on ‘Errances’, the production is better. The songs are longer than on the debut, yet it does not affect their approachable catchiness. They work with repetitive themes and catchy vocal lines, giving you an instant familiar feel. In addition to female violinist Cathy, the band added a female vocal touch. Singer Lucia does that in an excellent, not intrusive manner, that’s why she adds a zest to the mood of the record without ‘fronting the band’. Think of Draconian and Tristania. The howling guitar solos of Rosarius are always of major emotive value (think of Saturnus), while the soaring keyboards and classical piano interludes of Walran give the whole thing exactly that empyrean flavour in conjunction with their band name. On top of the female vocals, we also notice a wide range of different male vocals. Naturally we have the juicy growls, but there’s also momentous low male chants plus incidentally a well done scream and spoken fragments. In stunner ‘Moonflower’ (eighteen minutes long melancholic beauty!) even a part in French language. For the rest the band stays with English lyrics and this album surely has the potential for an international breakthrough. ‘La Litanie Des Cendres’ summarizes the essence of melodic gothic doom metal, without gliding into inaccessibility. Brilliant!

Zowat twee jaar geleden waren we diep onder de indruk van het fantastische debuutalbum ’Errances’ van de Franse doom/death/gothic metal band Angellore. Gelukkig stonden we niet alleen met onze bewondering, want een track als ‘I Am The Agony’ haalde moeiteloos 14.000 views op YouTube en het talent van de jonge band verspreidde zich als een lopend vuurtje onder de pers en de liefhebbers van het genre. Angellore is immers de belichaming van atmosferische doom/death met een gotisch sausje, waarbij invloeden van Draconian, Saturnus en Empyrium tot een persoonlijk manifest gekneed worden.
Er is lang en hard gewerkt aan de opvolger ‘La Litanie Des Cendres’ welke eind augustus door nieuwe broodheer, Shunu Records op de markt gebracht wordt. Dit kunstige werkje trekt al meteen de aandacht door zijn geraffineerde betoverende verpakking die allereerst verdiend om vermeld te worden. Florent Castellani heeft er een uitklapbaar tafereel van gemaakt met kaarten waarop teksten en de barokke beelden je meteen in de juiste stemming brengen. Deden deze beelden en het gebruik van de (weemoedige) viool ons al niet eerder aan de pracht van het vroegere Praag denken? Dan is de mistige, donkere sfeer ditmaal nog treffender gevat in het hele werk.
Muzikaal heeft dit gevoelsmatige project van bezielers Walran en Rosarius (met hulp van drummer Ronnie) eveneens een ontwikkeling doorgemaakt. Werkende met hetzelfde team als bij ‘Errances’ is de productie beter. De songs zijn nog langer dan op het debuut, maar dit gaat allerminst ten koste van hun aansprekende toegankelijkheid. Men werkt immers zodanig met terugkerende thema’s en catchy zanglijnen dat je al vlug een vertrouwd gevoel krijgt. Naast violiste Cathy heeft de band een vrouwelijke vocale toets aangebracht. Zangeres Lucia doet dit op een voortreffelijke, niet opdringerige manier zodat ze bijkomende sfeer schept in plaats van de boel naar haar hand te zetten. Denk aan Draconian en Tristania. De huilende gitaarsolo’s van Rosarius zijn telkens van grote emotionele waarde (denk aan Saturnus), terwijl de zwevende keyboards en klassieke pianostukjes van Walran het geheel net dat hemelse tintje geeft dat in conjunctie is met de bandnaam. Naast de inbreng der vrouwelijke vocalen is er tevens een grote afwisseling in de mannelijke zang. Uiteraard hebben we de sappige grunts, maar er is ook gewichtige lage mannenzang plus incidenteel enkele welgeplaatste screams en gesproken stukken. In klapstuk ‘Moonflower’ (achttien minuten lang weemoedige schoonheid!) zelfs even in de Franse taal. Verder blijft de band bij de Engelse taal, maar dit album heeft wel de potentie voor een internationale doorbraak. ‘La Litanie Des Cendres’ vat de essentie van melodieuze gotische doom metal samen, zonder te verglijden in ontoegankelijkheid. Prachtig!
