SACRI MONTI: S/T

The first result when googling Sacri Monti, were the Sacred Mountains in Italy. Those are several places of pilgrimage in the northern regions Piëmonte and Lombardy, which were founded during the 16th and 17th century. Most of the people didn’t have the means to travel to Jerusalem and went to these spots instead. The name of the drummer suggest an Italian background … he probably came up with the idea of using that name.
Musically, this band is totally into the retro movement using influences from the sixties and seventies. To be precise, the quintet harkens in the psychedelic heavy rock which was popular by the end of the sixties. Picture long songs which – seemingly jamming – once eerie floating, than heavy as shit drag along, with frequent use of distortion on voice and/or guitar. Huge helpings of organ are present of course, but also spacy synth stuff, reminding of Hawkwind, guitar soli which go in all directions, simple but effective riffing, drums which sound much more diverse, more musical than your average rhytm section … I won’t get into detail of separate songs, because here the mood the music bring you in is important? With this stuff one doesn’t need a reefer!
This kind of music follows the trail of hypnotic acid rock, but with a heavier accent.

Het eerste resultaat van een gegoogled Sacri Monti, waren de Heilige Bergen in Italië. Dit zijn verschillende bedevaartsoorden in de noordelijke regio's Piëmont en Lombardije, die tijdens de 16de en 17de eeuw werden opgericht. De meeste mensen hadden toen de middelen niet om naar Jeruzalem te trekken en gingen in plaats daarvan naar deze plekken. De naam van de drummer wijst op een Italiaanse achtergrond … wellicht kwam hij met het idee die naam te gebruiken.
Muzikaal zit deze band helemaal in de retro tendens die invloeden uit de sixties en seventies gebruikt. Om precies te zijn grijpt het vijftal terug naar de psychedelische heavy rock die in de late sixties populair was. Stel u lange nummers voor, die - ogenschijnlijk jammend – nu eens zweverig, dan weer bere heavy verder jakkeren, met geregeld gebruik van distorsie op stem en/of gitaar. Orgel porties ontbreken evenmin, maar ook Hawkwind-achtige spacy synthesizer stukken, gitaar soli die soms alle kanten uitwaaieren, eenvoudige stevige riffs, drums die veel diverser, muzikaler klinken dan doorsnee ritme sectie … Ik ga niet dieper in op de afzonderlijke nummers, omdat het hier vooral de sfeer die opgeroepen wordt belangrijk is. Met deze muziek heb je geen illegaal rokertje nodig!
Kortom, hiermee zitten ze in het kielzog van de hypnotische acid rock, maar met heavier invalshoek.
