THE V: Now Or Never

Veronica ‘the V’ Freeman, front lady for the heavy metallers Benedictum, has recorded, with a whole bunch of well known bass players and guitarists, as well as some partners in crime from the aforementioned band, her first solo effort.
‘Again’ kicks off as an excellent catchy melodic heavy metal piece and is followed by the rather hard rocking title track where the guitars provide an almost southern flavour, while the finale is stressed by a horn section. ‘Roller Coaster’ is in the same vein, but heavier with some accelerations. A bit further ‘Love Should Be’ is mid tempo, rather sombre Hr/metal, broodingly nice! As for ‘Again’, Michael Sweet (Stryper) held the production hilt and he did it less polished ( read ‘better’ ) than John Herrera, who took care of almost all the other songs. ‘Kiss My Lips’ is also rough, but that’s due to the alternating voices of metal babe V and Leather’s scream. ‘Spellbound’ has a nice break, where V, who displays on this album other facets of her vocal range, use a bit of her warm, soulful chord. ‘Ready To Run’ is a fast HR meets metal track.
The diversity of the songs is striking, partly due to the many guitarists, each with their own style. Personally, I like more unity in style, but this stays undeniably a fine collection of sturdy songs.

Band, haar eerste solo album ingeblikt.
‘Again’ trapt stevig af als prima catchy melodieuze heavy metal en wordt gevolgd door het eerder hard rockende titelnummer waar de gitaar een bijna southern tintje aan geeft, de finale wordt beklemtoont door een blazerssectie. ‘Roller Coaster’ volgt dezelfde lijn, maar is steviger en heeft enkele versnellingen. Wat verder is ‘Love Should Be’ een midtempo, eerder somber HR/metal stuk, broedend lekker! Net als bij ‘Again’ had Michael Sweet (Stryper) hier het productieheft in handen en hij doet dat iets minder gepolijst ( lees ‘beter’ )dan John Herrera, die quasi alle andere nummers verzorgde. ‘Kiss My Lips’ blijft ruig, maar dan door de wisselwerking van metal babe V met Leather’s rauwe strot. ‘Spellbound’ heeft een mooie break, waarin V, die op dit album sowieso vaak een ander facet van haar stem gebruikt, even uit een warm, gloedvol register put. ‘Ready To Run’ is een snelle HR/metal track.
Globaal valt de diversiteit van de nummers op, mede dank zij de verschillende gitaristen, die elk hun eigen stijl hebben. Persoonlijk heb ik liever wat meer stijlvastheid, maar dit blijft ontegensprekelijk een mooie verzameling stevige songs.
