DEEP BLACK: Nails

Hailing from eclectic metropolis Berlin and the woods around it, a new wave album crosses our path; created by vocalist Cain Seth Martians and Jack-of-all-trades Lee Bear God under the moniker Deep Black. They flirt with a dark, decadent style that invokes memories of Fields Of The Nephilim, Magazine and David Bowie. These influences are noticeable, but unfortunately the duo does not manage to convince us completely, mainly due to flaws in the vocals.
Opener ‘Nephilim’ is still an acceptable example of dramatic gothic rock, with vocal ranges of Cain that makes us frown an eyebrow from time to time. Yet the atmosphere happens to be more important than the execution. In between the songs we have some short interludes with electro sounds or other atmospheric spielerei. They are called like the seasons, but they seem quite superfluous. The third song ‘Them’ charms by its reminiscence to Inner Shrine. This is a quite well song with velvet chants and any samplers. On the other hand the title track appears to be cold wave, giving you an uneasy feel. Next their ammunition is as good as shot and it only leaps to the eye that Cain is not a great singer. Their wallowing in black romanticism has a semblance of Type O’Negative in ‘Some Day’, while Jim Morrison and Danzig probably inspired composing ‘This Road’. In this genre quite interesting albums are possible, but we’d rather refer to Soror Dolorosa than recommend this album which has its moments, but on the other side also lots of flaws.

Uit het bruisende Berlijn en zijn bosrijke omgeving komt ons een new wave album tegemoet; gecreëerd door zanger Cain Seth Martians en manusje-van-alles Lee Bear God onder de naam Deep Black. Zij koketteren met een donkere, decadente stijl die herinneringen aan Fields Of The Nephilim, Magazine en David Bowie oproept. Deze invloeden zijn merkbaar, maar helaas slaagt het duo er niet in om ons volledig te overtuigen, voornamelijk te wijten aan de zang.
Opener ‘Nephilim’ is nog een acceptabel voorbeeld van dramatische gothic rock, met vocale uitstapjes van Cain die ons nu al even een wenkbrauw doen fronsen. Toch haalt de sfeer het op de uitvoering. Tussen de songs staan intermezzo’s met electro geluiden of andere spielerei die de namen van de seizoenen kregen, maar dat lijkt ons vrij overbodig. Het derde nummer ‘Them’ charmeert door zijn verwantschap aan Inner Shrine. Een goede song met omfloerste stem en enige samplers. De titelsong is dan weer cold wave dat je een ongemakkelijk gevoel geeft. Daarna zijn de pijlen zo goed als verschoten en begint enkel op te vallen dat Cain maar een zwakke zangprestatie levert. Het zwelgen in zwart romanticisme kent in ‘Some Day’ nog een zweempje Type O’Negative, terwijl Jim Morrison en Danzig in ‘This Road’ waarschijnlijk model gestaan hebben. In dit genre zijn best sterke albums mogelijk, maar dan verwijzen wij toch liever naar Soror Dolorosa dan naar dit album dat zijn momenten kent, maar anderzijds teveel zwakke momenten herbergt.
