ROTTING CHRIST: Lucifer Over Athens (2CD)

When talking about the Yorkshire Trinity in the nineties, we thought of My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost and Anathema. When thinking about the Greek echelons of our metal genre, we instantly thought about Nightfall, Septic Flesh (at that time two words) and Rotting Christ. Thus it is really astonishing that the latter band only comes up now with the first official live album after 27 years activity, twelve studio albums and more than 1200 shows under their belts. Consequently it turned into a double album, registered in December 2013 in their home town Athens. Still it must have been a difficult mission to put up a set list and it will inevitable lead to discussions among the fans.
Rotting Christ is the musical vehicle of the brothers Sakis and Themis Tolis. Initially they started as grindcore band, but by the time of their debut ‘Thy Mighty Contract’ they already could be considered a black metal band. Late nineties they became less heavy and evolved toward dark gothic metal from ‘A Dead Poem’ on. Since ‘Khronos’ they returned to really harsh roots. On the latest three albums the more and more perfected extreme metal was regaled with all kinds of ethnic influences. Therefore it is not an easy task to put together a homogeneous set list, although it was never an issue on the Rotting Christ shows we attended. Also on ‘Lucifer Over Athens’ material from ‘A Dead Poem’ and ‘Sleep Of The Angels’ comes smoothly along in between the heaviness of a couple of exclusive tracks. Indeed, after a start with mainly familiar songs of the last three albums, they choose to play some obscure material that is not so well-known. Furthermore they play no less than six songs from the debut album ‘Thy Mighty Contract’ in the course of the show, but there might be a reason for that since the band – in addition to the infamous brothers, now existing of bassist Vangelis Karzis and guitarist George Emmanuel (he also did the mix) – properly rehearsed all the early material for a special show in Berlin one year earlier.
For the rest we can find about two songs from every album, so we can speak of a proper choice for this initiative. The band is as much as possible DIY: mastering by Sakis Tolis and mix by George Emmanuel. If there should be a point of criticism, it can be noticed there. The general sound of the record could have been better, although it means you get an honest sound. Nevertheless this long awaited live registration will be welcomed with genuine enthusiasm by the fans. The occult atmosphere of the band is caught perfectly. We can only hope for a visual addition on DVD/Blue-ray. In the meantime the guys are working on a next studio album – scheduled for 2016 – and the worldwide shows keep on coming.

Zoals we over Yorkshire in de jaren negentig spraken van een Heilige Drievuldigheid bestaande uit My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost en Anathema, zo dachten we bij de Griekse echelons in ons metalen genre meteen aan Nightfall, Septic Flesh (toen nog twee woorden) en Rotting Christ. Het is dan ook verbazingwekkend dat deze laatstgenoemde band nu pas een eerste officiële live album uitbrengt en dat na 27 jaar activiteit, twaalf studioalbums en meer dan 1200 shows achter de kiezen te hebben. Het is dan ook een dubbelalbum geworden, opgenomen in december 2013 in hun thuisstad Athene. Dan nog zal de setlist een moeilijke keuze geweest zijn en zal dit onvermijdelijk tot discussies onder de fans leiden.

Het mag geen verwondering wekken dat het moeilijk is om een homogene setlist op te stellen, maar toch is dit bij de door ons bezochte Rotting Christ concerten nooit een heikel punt geweest. Ook op ‘Lucifer Over Athens’ staat het materiaal van ‘A Dead Poem’ en ‘Sleep Of The Angels’ broederlijk tussen de heftigheid van een aantal exclusieve tracks. Want na een bekende start met voornamelijk songs van de laatste drie albums, kiest men vrij lang voor enig obscuur materiaal dat minder gekend is. Verder worden er in de loop van de show maar liefst zes songs gespeeld van het debuutalbum ‘Thy Mighty Contract’, maar dat is te verklaren omdat de band – naast de broers bestaande uit bassist Vangelis Karzis en gitarist George Emmanuel (hij deed ook de mix) – een jaar eerder al het vroege materiaal ingestudeerd had voor een speciale show in Berlijn.
Verder wordt er uit elk album wel een tweetal songs gespeeld en kunnen we dus spreken van een mooi verdeeld initiatief. De band hield zoveel mogelijk in eigen handen: mastering door Sakis Tolis en mix door George Emmanuel. Als er al een kanttekening gemaakt moet worden, dan is ie daarover te noteren. Het geluid kon beter, hoewel je aan de andere kant een eerlijke live opname hebt. Niettemin zal deze langverwachte live registratie enthousiast onthaald worden door de fans. De occulte sfeer van de band komt optimaal tot uiting. We kunnen alleen hopen dat er ook opnamen voor een visueel genoegen op DVD/Blue-ray gemaakt zijn. Intussen werkt de band al aan een volgend studioalbum – voorzien voor 2016 – en gaan de wereldwijde shows onverminderd door.
