WOLFHEART: Shadow World

The name of Tuomas Saukkonen popped up everywhere in the Finnish metal scène. His most famous band used to be Before The Dawn, but we also could find ourselves grandly in his works under monikers as Black Sun Aeon, Dawn Of Solace and we even once reviewed a completely Finnish album (lyrics as well) of RoutaSielu. For the fans of very melodic death metal with melancholic timbre, it might have been a bit confusing, that’s why Tuomas decided – in an impulse? – to gather his creations in future under the band name Wolfheart. Although… a band? He remains more of a lone wolf, since he did everything himself again on the debut album ‘Winterborn’, except for some guitar leads by Mika Lammassaari (Eternal Tears Of Sorrow).
But Tuomas did not rest on his laurels and now we are going to focus on the sophomore album ‘Shadow World’. It is a kind of synopsis of everything our active Finn stands for: melodic death metal with fluttering guitar soloing, refined piano interludes and his omnipresent juicy grunts as vocalist and front man. If the debut was written by the musician only, then ‘Shadow World’ happens to be team work of the four-piece band of which lead guitarist Mike could be spotted as Tuomas’ buddy earlier. Now that all projects of Saukkonen have united in Wolfheart, we hear melancholic yet vigorous tracks in which introspection regularly pops up. In this respect, opener ‘Aeons Of Gold’ appears to be a perfect example of things to come. Music that breathes a Finnish atmosphere with a winter feel all over and a must have for fans of Amorphis and Insomnium. In addition we notice any slight folk influences in ‘Last Of All Winters’, making the link with Amorphis quite an obvious one. A sparkling piano introduces the lengthy ‘Nemesis’, but a bit later it reaches proper blastbeat speed and it is utterly raucous. Smoother and catchier stuff one can find in ‘Abyss’ and ‘Resistance’ although the latter one has a blackish moment as well. A highlight is the marvellous ‘Veri’, starting with very melodious guitars and slow doom-like riffs. Plucking guitars lead towards an eruption with growls, followed by magnificent solos with true ear-candy brilliance. There is even a piano intermezzo, relished with strings, turning into a surprisingly symphonic finale. Can it be that Tuomas has found his definitive habitat? Anyways, it gives us another top notch album!

De naam Tuomas Saukkonen dook overal op in de Finse metal scène. Zijn bekendste band was Before The Dawn, maar we konden ons ook volledig vinden in zijn werk onder de namen Black Sun Aeon, Dawn Of Solace en we bespraken zelfs ooit een album van het totaal Finse (ook de teksten) RoutaSielu. Voor de fans van uiterst melodieuze death metal met weemoedige inborst, was het misschien wat moeilijk te volgen en dus besloot Tuomas – in een opwelling? – om voortaan al zijn creaties te verzamelen onder de groepsnaam Wolfheart. Nou ja, groep… hij blijft eerder ‘the lone wolf’ want op het debuut ‘Winterborn’ had hij alweer alles zelf gedaan, behalve enige gitaar leads door Mika Lammassaari (Eternal Tears Of Sorrow).
Maar Tuomas Saukkonen heeft niet stilgezeten en nu gaan we ons focussen op het tweede album ‘Shadow World’. Het is een synopsis van alles waar de actieve Fin voor staat: melodieuze death metal met uitwaaierende gitaarsolo’s, geraffineerde piano interludia en zijn allesomvattende volle grunt geluid als zanger. Was het debuut nog door de muzikant alleen geschreven, dan is ‘Shadow World’ teamwork van de vierkoppige band, waarvan leadgitarist Mika Lammassaari al eerder Tuomas’ buddy was. Nu alle projecten van Saukkonen zich verenigd hebben in Wolfheart, horen we melancholieke maar stevige tracks waarin geregeld plaats is voor introspectie. Opener ‘Aeon Of Cold’ is wat dat betreft een mooi voorbeeld van wat ons te wachten staat. Muziek die de Finse sfeer ademt met winters gevoel en verplichte kost is voor liefhebbers van Amorphis en Insomnium. Daarbij merken we in ‘Last Of All Winters’ enige folk invloeden, waardoor de link met Amorphis vlug gelegd is. Een sprankelende piano leidt het lange ‘Nemesis’ in dat even later echter blastbeat snelheden haalt en ongemeen ruw is. Zachter en aanstekelijk gaat het eraan toe in ‘Abyss’ en ‘Resistance’ hoewel het laatste niet gespeend is van een snuifje black wederom. Een hoogtepunt is het bloedmooie ‘Veri’ dat ingeleid wordt door melodieus gitaarspel en trage doom riffs herbergt. Tokkelende gitaren voeren ons naar een uitbarsting met growls, waarna prachtige solo’s een lust voor het oor zijn. Er is zelfs nog een piano intermezzo dat wordt aangedikt met strijkers, zodat er een verrassend symfonisch einde volgt. Zou Tuomas zijn definitieve habitat gevonden hebben? Het heeft in ieder geval alweer een topalbum opgeleverd!
