KING HEAVY: King Heavy

When thinking of Chile and doom metal, it is not only Pentagram and Mar De Grises anymore that crosses our minds. King Heavy started for real in 2012 after a gathering of congenial souls at Doom Shall Rise 2009, when bassist Daniel Perez Saa (ex-Procession) met the Belgian doom aficionado and vocalist Luce Vee (known from Hooded Priest). They released earlier an excellent received MCD ’Horror Absoluto’ that ended later on a split with Doomlord as well.
But the gloves are off for this Chilean/Belgian collective and thus the self-titled debut album will be launched at the world pretty soon. This is surely recommended for fans of traditional doom metal with some necessary fervent accelerations, since they rock heavy in an occult manner. Opener ‘La Gargola’ already convinces us with its resounding solid riffs with slightly dramatic vocals, but on the other hand we also hear proper accelerations with excellent guitar solos from Mathias Aguirre. The thing what makes this band a memorable one, is the addition of atmospheric fragments in which bass intermezzos or semi-acoustic guitars regale us with inventive passages. Songs like ‘Life A.D.’ and ‘As Dawn Broke On The Day’ include enough dynamics to contrast with the global dark atmosphere. Luce Vee is not just a singer, he gracefully wades through the lengthy songs with dignity and theatrical exposure. In the meantime the band puts down an ultra tight, yet heavy sound. A nice example of that is the eleven minutes long final track ‘He Who Spoke In Tongues’, although the repetitive fade out might be a bit too long. On the other side it brings the occult vibe of the album to a climax this way. This is sure-fire doom with explicit vocals. The recordings took place in Chile as well as in Belgium (vocals) and right after the release date they will embark to Europe to play at Malta’s Doom Fest and Dutch Doom Days. In addition they will play at the notorious Belgian Biebob club on the last day of October, being part of Delirium Fest II. Thus an excellent start of this fest is assured!

Bij Chili en doom metal denken we allang niet meer alleen aan Pentagram en Mar De Grises. King Heavy kwam daar in 2012 tot volle wasdom nadat bassist Daniel Perez Saa (ex-Procession) de Belgische doomfanaat en zanger Luce Vee (bekend van Hooded Priest) had leren kennen op het Duitse Doom Shall Rise festival in 2009. Eerder bracht de band een goed ontvangen MCD uit: ’Horror Absoluto’ dat later ook nog eens op een split met Doomlord belandde.
Maar het is menens bij dit Chileense/Belgische gezelschap en dus verschijnt eerstdaags het titelloze debuutalbum. Zeker een aanrader voor fans van traditionele doom metal met de nodige peper in de reet, want hier wordt op occulte wijze gerockt. Zo bevat opener ‘La Gargola’ al solide galmende riffs met licht dramatische zang, maar ook fikse acceleraties met uitstekende gitaarsolo’s van Mathias Aguirre. Wat de band echter een memorabel geluid geeft zijn de atmosferische stukken waarin basintermezzo’s en semi-akoestische gitaren voor inventieve passages zorgen. Songs als ‘Life A.D.’ en ‘As Dawn Broke On The Day’ bevatten genoeg veerkracht om te contrasteren met de duistere sfeer. Luce Vee zingt niet zomaar, hij waadt als het ware doorheen de lange songs met waardigheid en theatraal vertoon. Intussen zorgt de band voor een strak, maar heavy geluid. Een mooi voorbeeld hiervan is het elf minuten durende ‘He Who Spoke In Tongues’ dat door zijn repetitief einde wat al te lang gerokken wordt, maar anderzijds de occulte sfeer van de plaat naar een climax brengt. Puike doom met een expliciete stem is dit. De opnamen gebeurden zowel in Chili als in België (de zang) en de band maakt vlak na de releasedatum de oversteek naar Europa om op te treden op Malta’s Doom Fest en Dutch Doom Days. Tevens zullen ze op de laatste dag van oktober in de befaamde Belgische Biebob club optreden tijdens Delirium Fest II. Dat staat garant voor een spetterende start der festiviteiten!
