PRAYING MANTIS: Legacy

Founded in 1973, Praying Mantis was one of the bands who spearheaded the NWOBHM, but those days are long gone. Since then their style evolved to melodic HR/AOR. However, with this new album they make a visual link with the past, because Rodney Matthews, who conceived the brilliant cover for their debut, made one in the same vein for this ‘Legacy’.
The opening song is a sturdy, but melodic piece of hard rock in which Jaycee proves straight away what a phenomenal throat he has, with a tone color reminding of Coverdale/Dio. ‘The One’ is classy AOR where the singing is somewhat more composed. Next two songs are more rocking, the catchy ‘Tokyo’ being accommodated with a nice Eastern colored intro. ‘Better Man’ is a tasteful, rather dark power ballad with nice keyboard fills, where Jaycee excels again. After another fine AOR track, one of the better songs, ‘Eyes Of A Child’, goes very Dio with an intro reminding of Europe’s ‘Final Countdown’. Next one begins with a piece of keyboard transiting into a nice riff and, deeper into the song, some flashing axework! Let this be the moment to stress that the musicians do a fine job as well. ‘Against The World’ again has something epic, bombastic … and did I already mention the backing vocals which complement Jaycee? The best riff was kept for the closer, a fresh, vigorous hook contrasting with the dark hard rock.
‘Legacy’ is certainly a good album, but Jaycee’s input makes it a great one.

Opgericht in 1973, behoorde Praying Mantis ooit tot de frontlinie van de NWOBHM bands, maar die tijden zijn lang vervlogen. Sindsdien is hun stijl eerder naar melodieuze HR/AOR verschoven. Met dit nieuwe album wordt echter visueel de link gelegd met het verleden, want Rodney Matthews, die de schitterende hoes van hun debuut verzorgde, maakte er ééntje in dezelfde lijn voor deze ‘Legacy’.
Opener is een stevige, maar melodieuze brok hardrock waarin Jaycee van meet af aan bewijst wat een fenomenale strot hij heeft, met een timbre dat in de buurt van Coverdale/Dio zit. Opvolger ‘The One’ is klasse AOR waarop iets beheerster gezongen wordt. Op de twee volgende gaat het weer meer rocken, waarbij het catchy ‘Tokyo’ van een Oosters klinkende intro voorzien wordt. ‘Better Man’ is een gesmaakte, vrij donkere powerballad met mooie invulling door keyboard, waarop Jaycee nog eens mag schitteren. Na nog een beheerst streepje AOR, gaat ‘Eyes Of A Child’, één van de betere nummers, erg richting Dio met een intro die wat aan Europe’s ‘Final Countdown’ doet denken. Volgend nummer begint met een stukje keyboard dat overgaat in een goeie riff en, verder in het nummer, flitsend gitaarwerk! Toch even benadrukken dat de muzikanten ook schitterend werk leveren. ‘Against The World’ heeft weer iets episch, bombastisch … heb ik al de backing vocals vermeld die hier en daar Jaycee weerwerk bieden? De beste riff hebben ze voor de afsluiter gehouden, een frisse, opgewekte hook die contrasteert met de donkere hardrock.
‘Legacy’ is een zeker goeie schijf, maar Jaycee’s inbreng maakt er een schitterende van.
