PATH OF SAMSARA: The Fiery Hand

Curious as I am, I sought if the band name meant anything. Well, Samsara is a Sanskrit word, meaning continuous flow: the repeating cycle of birth, live, death and reincarnation. Peculiar, for not so long ago, I listened to My Sleeping Karma, which chose names for their songs in that same language. Anyway, according to the biography they play ‘black magic rock’n roll’. Let’s see what that means.
The title track and its follow up ‘Veil Of Gold’ are dark rockers, energetic and up tempo, first one has a whiff of folk in its midst, while the second contains a lengthy psychedelic passage. ‘Serpent Magick’ marks the start of another phase of the album. It’s introvert, somber, eerie, minimalistic, with a darker second half, reminding of Sophia. Next one is again a long song, however less eerie, while ‘Da Doud…’ is a threatening trip in which clean and, mainly, black growling alternate. ‘Blue Demon’’s calm intro brings some relief, while the songs evolves toward poppy psychedelic and becomes plump and heavy in the finale. By the way, in this song vocals come into it’s own the best. As a contrast, ‘Pyredancer’ is much more rock with a nice piece of jamming. Here starts the last part of the album, where less psychedelic parts occur and the songs are sturdier. ‘Saturn’ is arguably the most straightforward song, with a peculiar piece of guitar making me think of the sound of seagulls. ‘Gateway’ even contains catchy parts and the very long ‘Supernova’ is diverse enough to be entertaining, there’s even a passage that shows some surf influences. The closing song, with a passage that made me think of The Doors, has an almost sludgy finale.
Rather than their own description, I’d say this is a strong album with ‘dark experimental rock’.

Nieuwsgierig als ik ben, zocht ik via wiki of de bandnaam iets betekent. Nou, Samsara is een woord uit het Sanskriet dat iets als ‘continue stroom’ betekent: de zich herhalende cyclus van geboorte, leven, dood en reïncarnatie. Merkwaardig, want nog niet zo lang geleden luisterde ik naar My Sleeping Karma, die songtitels had in die taal. Hoe dan ook, volgens de bio spelen ze ‘black magic rock’n roll’. Laten we dat eens nader bekijken.
Het titelnummer en diens opvolger ‘Veil Of Gold’ zijn donkere rockers, ze zijn energiek en uptempo, de eerste heeft met snuifje folk halverwege, terwijl de tweede een flinke psychedelische passage bevat. ‘Serpent Magick’ is het begin van een nieuwe fase in het album. Introvert, somber, zweverig, minimalistisch, met een donkerder tweede helft, die me aan Sophia deed denken. Het volgende is wéér een lang nummer, echter minder zweverig, terwijl ‘Da Doud …’ een dreigende trip is waarin clean en, hoofdzakelijk, black gegrom elkaar afwisselen. De kalme intro van ‘Blue Demon’ brengt soelaas, terwijl het nummer verder poppy psychedelisch evolueert en zwaar, log en heavy wordt in de finale. In dit nummer komt de stem overigens het best tot zijn recht. ‘Pyredancer’, veel meer rock, waarin een mooi stukje gejamd, contrasteert. Hier begint zowat het derde deel van de schijf, waarin het psychedelische minder aan bod komt en de songs steviger zijn. ‘Saturn’ is waarschijnlijk de meest rechttoe-rechtaan rocker, met een merkwaardig stukje gitaar dat aan het geluid van meeuwen doet denken. ‘Gateway’ heeft zowaar catchy stukken en het erg lange ‘Supernova’ is divers genoeg om boeiend te blijven, er zit zelfs een stukje in dat surf invloeden heeft. De afsluiter, met een stukje dat aan The Doors denken doet, heeft een bijna sludgy finale.
Eerder dan hun eigen omschrijving, zou ik stellen dat dit een sterk album is met ‘duistere experimentele rock’.
