DRAGONY: Shadowplay

Three years after their debut ‘Legends’, which received great response from press and public alike, the Austrians return with an album where their ‘glory metal’ comes even better to its own. This according to the bio, because yours truly doesn’t know that aforementioned debut. Let’s have a look …
‘Wolves’ characteristically kicks off with fast power in a song with catchy chorus and orchestral arrangement, for which Lukas Knoebl (Illuminata) deserves the credits. It is well worth of the name ‘glory metal’. ‘Shadowrunners’ is better, more energetic and catchier. ‘Kiln’ is purely heroic, then slowing down to the short ‘Maiden’s Cliff’, a nice folk ballad. ‘Warlock’ has Latin choir, royal arrangements, but as well a raw edge due to a higher metal value. ‘Babylon’ is quite divers in structure with slow, fast and pompous parts. ‘Dr Agony’ is the most rocking song and proves – mark the word game – that they can relativize themselves, while the use of the ‘doctor, doctor, please’ referring to UFO cannot be a coincidence. And so forth, till the closing song where Zak Stevens (a.o. Circle II Circle) adds his voice.
The aforementioned enumeration should make clear that Dragony isn’t your everyday symfo power band. This is polished and elaborated, but not so much that it gets monotonous. Strong!

Drie jaar na hun debuut ‘Legends’, dat erg goed ontvangen werd door pers en publiek, komen de Oostenrijkers terug met een album waarop hun ‘glory metal’ nog beter tot zijn recht komt. Dit volgens de bio, want uw dienaar kent dit voormelde debuut niet. Laten we eens kijken …
‘Wolves’ trapt karakteristiek af met snelle power in een nummer met catchy refrein en orkestraal arrangement, dat door Lukas Knoebl (Illuminata) verzorgd werd. Het verdient de benaming ‘glory metal‘ ten volle. ‘Shadowrunners’ is beter, energieker en catchier. ‘Kiln’ is ronduit heroïsch, terwijl het korte rustpunt ‘Maiden’s Cliff’ een fijne folk ballad is. ‘Warlock’ heeft Latijns koor, royale arrangementen, maar heeft tegelijk een rauw randje door groter metal gehalte. ‘Babylon’ is erg divers in opbouw met snelle, trage en pompeuze stukken. ‘Dr. Agony’ is het meest rockend en bewijst – let op het woordspelletje – dat ze zichzelf weten te relativeren; dat de zinsnede ‘doctor, doctor, please’ aan UFO refereert zal ook wel geen toeval zijn. Zo gaat het verder tot de afsluiter waar niemand minder dan Zak Stevens (o.a. Circle II Circle) meezingt.
Uit voorgaande opsomming mag blijken dat Dragony lang geen doordeweekse symfo power heeft gemaakt. Dit is gepolijst en afgewerkt, maar niet teveel zodat het nergens melig wordt. Sterk!
