ENTWINE: Chaotic Nation

For years – more precisely from 1999 till 2006 – the Finnish band Entwine used to be our trusty supplier of an annual portion proper gothic metal. In 2009 the excellen ’Painstained’ came out, but then it became silent around one of the echelons of the Finnish gothic scène. In 2012 it was officially announced that they would have a sabbatical and drummer Aksu Hanttu became one of the most respected producers in his country. However; early 2014 they announced that they were working on a seventh album. The band took its time and now they present us ‘Chaotic Nation’ this Fall.
What was going on for a while, has been developed and perfected on this new album. The line between gothic rock en alternative rock, nay pop, has always been quite thin, due to the huge catchiness of the compact compositions of the band. Now ‘Chaotic Nation’ brims with songs that can easily be played on the radio and will appeal to a broad audience. Fortunately main composer/guitarist Tom Mikkola and his gang hold on to high quality standards and consequently the band convince us with its craftsmanship. They are masters in writing fetching songs and they do that with ardour, bravura and some necessary variation. With Mika Tauriainen they have a singer with a powerful voice full of emotions, while many of the songs are graced with magnificent, wild guitar solos. Aksu used his know-how to achieve a crystal-clear production. Thus we can just uncomplicatedly enjoy this record from start to finish, starting with two heavy rockers ‘End Of Silence’ and ‘Saint Of Sorrow’. Sentiment in Mika’s voice increases during the keyboards featured ‘Fortune Falls’. Smoothly we sail through the single ‘Plastic World’ and the semi-ballad ‘As We Arise’. Yet it is remarkable how the band manages to bring us in a good mood with catchy melodies in the compelling ‘Adrenalize’ (it reminds me of Live again) and the juicy sung ‘The Evil Lies In The Shadows’. Finnish melancholy is a bit drawn back on ‘Chaotic Nation’, except for the low-ranged sung, yet energetic ‘Revolt For Redemption’. This is a perfect record to play in the car at high volume!

Jarenlang – van 1999 tot 2006 om precies te zijn – was het Finse Entwine onze trouwe leverancier van een jaarlijkse portie degelijke gothic metal. In 2009 verscheen nog het uitstekende ’Painstained’, maar toen werd het stil rond één van de boegbeelden van de Finse gotische scène. In 2012 werd officieel een sabbatperiode aangekondigd en drummer Aksu Hanttu ontpopte zich tot één van de meest gewaardeerde producers in eigen land. Echter, begin 2014 werd aangekondigd dat er gewerkt werd aan een zevende album. De band nam ruim de tijd en presenteert ons deze herfst ‘Chaotic Nation’.
Wat al een tijdje aan de gang was, heeft zich volledig ontwikkeld op dit nieuwe album. De lijn tussen gothic rock en alternatieve rock, ja zelfs pop, is altijd vrij dun geweest wegens de grote aanstekelijkheid van de compacte composities van de band. ‘Chaotic Nation’ echter, staat vol songs die zo op de radio gedraaid kunnen worden en een breed publiek kunnen aanspreken. Gelukkig hanteert hoofdcomponist/gitarist Tom Mikkola met zijn bende hoge normen en blijft de band overtuigen door zijn vakmanschap. Ze kunnen nu eenmaal rake deunen schrijven en dat doen ze met veel branie en de nodige variatie. In Mika Tauriainen hebben ze een zanger met een krachtige stem vol emoties, terwijl meerdere songs voorzien zijn van spetterende gitaarsolo’s. Aksu wendde zijn verkregen knowhow aan in een glasheldere productie. Bijgevolg is het gewoon ongecompliceerd genieten geblazen van begin tot einde, met om te beginnen twee stevige inswingers ‘End Of Silence’ en ‘Saint Of Sorrow’. Het sentiment in Mika’s stem groeit tijdens het met toetsen overladen ‘Fortune Falls’. Vlot zeilen we ook doorheen de single ‘Plastic World’ en de semi-ballade ‘As We Arise’. Toch wel opmerkelijk hoe de band ons humeur weet op te krikken met aanstekelijke melodieën in het meeslepende ‘Adrenalize’ (dat me weer aan Live doet denken) en het smeuïg gezongen ‘The Evil Lies In The Shadows’. De Finse melancholie is een beetje terug gedrongen op ‘Chaotic Nation’, behalve in het laag gezongen, maar stuwende ‘Revolt For Redemption’. Een geknipte plaat om op hoog volume in de auto te draaien!
