MACBETH: Imperium

This band from Eastern Germany was founded in the early eighties, but it wasn’t till 2006 before their debut was released. ‘Imperium’ is their fourth album.
We get an airy intro from which the weighty name ‘Ultima Ratio Regis’ (= the last resort of the king, being armed intervention) refers to the recurring theme of war in their songs (gun salvo in an intro, bajonets, ‘napalm in the morning’, …). After that the German sung/shouted heavy/thrash attack blows up in our face. ‘Inferno’ is in the same vein with sturdy backings, more changes of pace and a fine guitar solo. The next one is pretty violent as well, but ‘Verloren’ is a beautiful, mostly instrumental ballad. The second half of this album is more varied and with less thrash influences. ‘Pawlovs Haus’ opens rather bombastic with kind of ‘Choirs of The Red Army’ before nervously tearing along. The title track is rather heavy, than thrash and contains a long brilliant solo as finale, while ‘Sturm’ does even better. The closer is slower and heavy thumping with keyboards, sounding like cello (or is it simply a cello), at the start and halfway the song.
The digipak version contains three extra songs. The English sung ‘Death Under Moonlight’ from their early days (late eighties). It’s tighter, thrashier/speedier, but also shows that, since those days, they evolved towards a style of their own and that their native tongue is definitely an asset, after which two acoustic versions (again that ‘cello’) of older songs close the album.
Great album due to the original musical approach of dark heavy with thrash influences in great songs. Go for the digipak!

Deze band uit de vroegere DDR werd opgericht in de vroege eighties, maar het was pas in 2006 dat hun debuut werd uitgebracht. ‘Imperium’ is hun vierde schijf.
We krijgen een luchtige intro waarvan zwaarwichtige naam ‘Ultima Ratio Regis’ (= de laatste toevlucht van de koning, zijnde gewapende interventie ) wijst op het thema oorlog dat geregeld terugkomt in hun nummers (geweersalvo’s in een intro, iets over bajonetten, ‘napalm in de ochtend’, … ). Hierna knalt de Duits gezongen/geschreeuwde heavy/thrash attack in ons gezicht. ‘Inferno’ ligt in dezelfde lijn met stoere backings, meer tempowissels en een mooie gitaarsolo. Ook in het volgende nummer hakken ze erop los, maar ‘Verloren’ is een mooie, grotendeels instrumentale ballad. De tweede helft van het album heeft nog meer variatie en minder uitgesproken thrash invloed. ‘Pawlovs Haus’ opent vrij bombastisch met een soort ‘Koor van het Rode Leger’ vooraleer nerveus verder te scheuren. Het titelnummer is eerder heavy dan thrash en bevat een lange schitterende solo als finale, terwijl ‘Sturm’ daar nog een fikse schep bovenop doet.
De afsluiter is trager en dreunend heavy met keyboard, die klinken als cello (of is het gewoon een cello), in de intro en halverwege het nummer.
Op de digipak versie staan drie extra nummers. Het Engels gezongen ‘Death Under Moonlight’, dat uit hun beginjaren (eind eighties) dateert. Het is snediger, thrashier, meer speed, maar toont ook dat hun stijl nu origineler is dan in die beginjaren en dat het Duits een meerwaarde is, waarna twee akoestische versies (weer die ‘cello’) van vroegere nummers afsluiten.
Straffe schijf dankzij een originele muzikale aanpak met een duistere heavy, van thrash invloeden voorziene, metal in goeie songs. Mis de digipak niet!
