MY DYING BRIDE: Feel The Misery

The wait is almost over! Three years after their previous doom epos ’A Map Of All Our Failures’, the British doom institute My Dying Bride comes with new work. On the eighteenth of September we can quench ourselves with the glorious tristesse of ‘Feel The Misery’. Indeed, the title speaks volumes and obviously the masters of melancholic sadness have made a compelling piece of art of it, giving you the opportunity to wallow in ultimate desperation for more than one hour. This is the first album with guitarist Calvin Robertshaw who came back in the band when Hamish left, while Dan Mullins is credited as guest drummer. But – as always – it is the deeply rooted in darkness, beseeching voice of Aaron Stainthorpe and the graceful leads of Andrew Craighan and Calvin that bring the eight new songs to a higher level.
The album starts remarkable up-tempo with ‘And My Father Left Forever’ with clean vocals which sound genuinely tormented. How magnificent are those clean chants of Aaron and they kind of fly above the ultra tight instrumentation. With violin graceful accents are made on the snappy, stomping riffs. Very recognizable is the peeping guitar sound, a true trademark of My Dying Bride. This is an amazing beginning, inspired by life itself and put down in a masterly homage. ‘To Shiver In Empty Halls’ explodes really heavy, with raucous grunts in galore. Yet halfway this heaviness is sublimated by any clean sung lines. Quiescent passages with piano and diffuse guitar sounds lead towards an oppressive spoken part that goes straight to the heart, to end up with nearly funeral doom unwieldiness. Surprisingly there is a semi-whispered finale that has a proper folky vibe.
In the third song with a length of nine minutes, ‘A Cold New Curse’, clean vocals and grunts are intermittent on a bed of beautiful, emotive guitar leads that serpentine around the sturdy riffs. They work their way to a dramatic end with violins and a long drawn out scream. Just like in the first track, one can find a kind of catchiness in the title track. It is almost embarrassing how you tend to sing along with ‘Feel The Misery’. The use of piano and keyboards demands a special mention on this album too. ‘A Thorn Of Wisdom’ includes clean vocals only again, after a bewitching intro with crystal clear sounds (is that harp or all piano?). Lena gets in the spotlights with a bass intermezzo, supported by dignified organ beauty. They go in crescendo to a howling guitar solo and the end comes abrupt. The dry drum patterns of Mullins are starring at the beginning and end of ‘I Celebrate Your Skin’ which is one of the slowest songs and it has an unexpected end with solemn chants. Touching beauty! That is also tenable for ‘I Almost Loved You’. I don’t think I have ever heard such a beautiful, fragile love song! Piano and violins are the bare company of Aaron’s majestic vocals. The last track ‘Within A Sleeping Forest’ reigns again with the contrast between clean, sad vocals and rolling grunts, meandering solos and ponderous doom riffs. Without batting an eyelid, we can say that My Dying Bride has delivered their next masterpiece!

Het wachten is bijna over! Drie jaar na hun vorige doomepos ’A Map Of All Our Failures’ komt het Britse doominstituut My Dying Bride met nieuw werk. Op achttien september kunnen we ons laven aan de glorierijke tristesse van ‘Feel The Misery’. Ja, die titel spreekt weer boekdelen en uiteraard hebben de meesters der melancholische smart er een meeslepend werkje van gemaakt dat je de gelegenheid geeft om je meer dan een uur te wentelen in opperste wanhoop. Dit is het eerste album met de teruggekeerde gitarist Calvin Robertshaw (in de plaats van Hamish), terwijl Dan Mullins als gastdrummer vermeld wordt. Maar zoals steeds is het de in diepe duisternis badende, smekende zang van Aaron Stainthorpe en de sierlijke leads van Andrew Craighan en Calvin die de acht nieuwe songs naar grote hoogte stuwen.
Het album begint opmerkelijk uptempo met ‘And My Father Left Forever’ met cleane zang die eerlijk getormenteerd klinkt. Wat zijn de cleane vocalen van Aaron prachtig en ze zweven als het ware over het erg strakke instrumentarium. Met viool worden sierlijke accenten gelegd op de bitsig, stotende riffs. En herkenbaar is het piepende gitaargeluid waar My Dying Bride een patent op heeft. Schitterende start is dit, uit het leven gegrepen en vertaald naar een meesterlijke ode. ‘To Shiver In Empty Halls’ valt zwaar binnen met ruwe grunts in vol ornaat. Maar deze heftigheid wordt halverwege gesublimeerd door enkele clean gezongen lijnen. Verstilde passages met piano en diffuse afwachtende gitaarklanken leiden naar een beklemmend gesproken stuk dat recht naar het hart grijpt, om dan ten slotte in bijna funeral doom logheid uit te vallen. Verrassend genoeg is er een fluisterend einde dat erg folky aandoet.
In het derde nummer van negen minuten lengte, ‘A Cold New Curse’ wordt cleane zang en grunts afgewisseld op een bedje van mooie, gevoelige gitaarsolo’s die zich slingeren rond de stugge riffs. Men werkt toe naar een dramatisch einde met violen en een langgerekte schreeuw. Net als in het eerste nummer valt er een zekere aanstekelijkheid te bespeuren in het titelnummer. Het is bijna beschamend hoe je ‘Feel The Misery’ luchtig gaat meezingen. Ook de pianoklanken verdienen een speciale vermelding op dit album. ‘A Thorn Of Wisdom’ kent eveneens enkel cleane zang, nadat kristalheldere klanken (zelfs harp, of is het enkel piano?) voor een prachtige intro zorgen. Tijdens een basintermezzo treedt Lena in de schijnwerpers, geruggensteund door waardige orgelklanken. Men gaat in crescendo naar een huilende gitaarsolo en het einde komt plots. Het droge drumgeluid van Mullins vormt begin en einde van ‘I Celebrate Your Skin’ dat één van de traagste songs is en nog een verrassend einde heeft met plechtige zang. Ontroerend mooi! Dat kan ook gezegd worden van ‘I Almost Loved You’. Ik denk niet dat ik ooit al zo’n prachtig, fragiel liefdeslied heb gehoord! Piano en viool vormen de naakte begeleiding van Aaron’s majestueuze zang. Het laatste nummer ‘Within A Sleeping Forest’ speelt terug oppermachtig met het contrast van cleane, droeve zang met rollende grunts, meanderende solo’s en zware doom riffs. Zonder blikken of blozen kunnen we stellen dat My Dying Bride een volgend meesterwerk heeft afgeleverd!
