SEAMOUNT: Nitro Jesus

This band was founded by German guitar player Tim Schmidt and the American singer Phil Swanson. In 2008 their debut was entitled ‘NTODRM’, which means New Torch Of Doom Rock Music. With this ‘Nitro Jesus’, they add a fifth album to their discography.
The opener kicks off with a chunky piece of heavy metal meets doom with spacy keyboard in the break and jamming sharp guitar in the finale, after which they deliver with ‘Can’t Escape’ a slower, awkward variety. The title track, in spite of nice tambourine and fine riff, doesn’t fit here, because it’s somehow too metal, but ‘Scars’ amends this, reminding end seventies Black Sabbath, though I find that ‘Emotional Stuntman’ sounding a bit stupid. The tambourine resurfaces in ‘Sun’ and is one of the reasons the song sounds a bit too merry. Luckily, ‘Bulletproof’ is a lurking beast again. The remaining songs are basically doomy, but in ‘Sadness’ we get an AC/DC riff, ‘No One Knows’ has punk rock influences and in the long closer there’s something poppy eighties.
In short, this album starts good with its classic doom and has some strong songs, but lacks coherence in style.

Deze band werd opgericht door de Duitse gitarist Tim Schmidt en de Amerikaanse zanger Phil Swanson. In 2008 debuteerden ze met ‘NTODRM’, dat staat voor New Torch Of Doom Rock Music. Met deze ‘Nitro Jesus’ voegen ze een vijfde album toe aan hun discografie.
De opener steekt van wal met een stevige brok heavy metal meets doom met spacy keyboard in de break en jammende scherpe gitaar in de finale, daarna zetten ze met ‘Can’t Escape‘ een tragere, loggere variant neer. Het titelnummer, de toevoeging van tambourijn en de goeie riff ten spijt, past niet echt in het rijtje, wegens ergens té metal, maar ‘Scars’ maakt dat weer goed, denk aan eind seventies Black Sabbath, al vind ik dat ‘Emotional Stuntman’ flauw klinken. In ‘Sun’ duikt de tamboerijn weer op en zorgt er mee voor dat het nummer iets te opgewekt klinkt. ‘Bulletproof’ is echter weer een broeiend monster. De rest blijft enigszins doomy, maar in ‘Sadness’ vinden we een AC/DC riff, ‘No One Knows’ heeft punkrock invloeden en in de lange afsluiter zit iets poppy eighties.
Kortom, het album begint goed met zijn klassieke doom en heeft enkele sterke nummers, maar mist stijlvastheid.
