AXXIS: Doom Of Destiny

German band Axxis has been around since many years, more precisely since 1989. Their first albums were a shot in a bull’s eye with reluctant sales, after that, things got a bit more difficult to face the turbulence of upcoming concurrence. Early 2006 ‘Paradise In Flames’ was launched and it was well received. Vocalist Bernhard Weiss was supported by female vocalist Lakonia and this formula is prolonged on ‘Doom Of Destiny’. It turned out to be a bummer that mistress Lakonia did not want to go on tour with the band, for Axxis will be joining Gamma Ray and Helloween during their extensive European tour. They have found a replacement in Roman female singer and label mates Magica, their singer will do the vocals on the upcoming tour.
2007 heralded new adventures and challenges for the band. They had to find a new guitar player: Marco Wriedt and I have to admit that guitar skills on ‘Doom Of Destiny’ are a major plus. This young recruit gives an extra push to the mainly German allied material. Which things are bothering me? Vocals… in the first place. I do not like this harmony vocals and bombastic tinges. Bernhard Weiss surely has a proper voice – a bit along the lines of Klaus Meine of Scorpions sometimes – but the material invokes way too many commercial tendencies for a regular metal fan. Let’s check it out…
The intro in proper Carmina Burama style with strings and sturdy choirs is fine, a bit Therion alike as well. In the title track ‘Doom Of Destiny (Arabia)’ we hear some obvious eastern influences. It is a flashing power metal track with close harmony chants. Nowadays Axxis has some reminiscence with Helloween. Just listen to the cheerful German allied ‘Bloodangel’ or the straight speed metal in ‘Father, Father’ and you will know what I mean. Also up-tempo rocker with a bit more room for keyboards ‘Revolutions’ has a nearest approach to Helloween. Less challenging tracks are the mellifluent ‘The Fire Still Burns’ (I do not like rock opera’s) ‘She Got Nine Lifes’ (with its childish female vocals and spelling mistake) and the bombastic, high pitched sung ‘I Hear You Cry’ including too much pathetic feelings. Fortunately we have some proper heavy metal tracks like ‘Devilish Belle’ and ‘Astoria’ graced with delicious guitar skills. A bit mixed feelings about Axxis, I would say, but I hope they will swallow the bait in a live situation.

Het Duitse Axxis gaat al heel wat jaartjes mee, sinds 1989 om precies te zijn. Hun eerste albums gingen als zoete broodjes over de toonbank, daarna werd het wat moeilijker om zich staande te houden in de woelige zee van harde concurrentie. Begin 2006 kwam ‘Paradise In Flames’ uit en dit album werd goed ontvangen. Zanger Bernhard Weiss werd daarop bijgestaan door zangeres Lakonia en deze formule hebben ze op ‘Doom Of Destiny’ aangehouden. Wel sneu dat achteraf bleek dat mevrouw Lakonia geen zin heeft om mee te toeren, want Axxis gaat omstreeks deze tijd de baan op met Gamma Ray en Helloween. Ze hebben dan wel vervanging gevonden in labelgenoten Magica’s zangeres om de boel te redden.
2007 bracht weer nieuwe avonturen voor de band. Heel wat tijd ging in het zoeken en aanwerven van een nieuwe gitarist: Marco Wriedt en ik moet eerlijk zeggen dat het gitaarwerk op ‘Doom Of Destiny’ het grootste pluspunt is. Deze jonge kracht geeft echt een extra push aan de veelal nogal Duits gerichte composities. Waar heb ik namelijk nogal moeite mee? De zang. Ik houd niet zo van de samenzang en bombarie. Bernhard Weiss heeft best een goede stem – een beetje in de trant van Klaus Meine soms – maar het materiaal bevat ook enkele commerciële tendensen dat voor de reguliere metalfan beelden oproept van veel te commerciële toegevingen. Laten we het even aflopen…

In het titelnummer ‘Doom Of Destiny (Arabia)’ horen we voor de hand liggende oosterse invloeden. Het is een flitsende power metal track met toffe gitaarsolo’s. Ook ‘Better Fate’ is een stevige track al hebben we hier al meer samenzang. Axxis heeft tegenwoordig nogal wat raakvlakken met Helloween. Luister maar naar het vrolijk Duitse ‘Bloodangel’ of de speed metal in ‘Father, Father’ één van de beste songs van dit album. Ook up-tempo rocker met wat meer ruimte voor toetsen ‘Revolutions’ schurkt zonder scrupules aan tegen Helloween. Minpunten zijn het melige ‘The Fire Still Burns’ (ik krijg de schubben van rockopera’s), ‘She Got Nine Lifes’ (met zijn kinderlijke zang en spellingsfout) en het bombastische, hoog gezongen ‘I Hear You Cry’ waarin teveel pathetiek zit. Gelukkig zijn er ook nog stevige metaltracks als ‘Devilish Belle’ en het van knap gitaarwerk voorziene ‘Astoria’. Een beetje gemengde gevoelens dus bij Axxis, maar live zullen ze er wel stevig tegenaan gaan, veronderstel ik.
