Once there was Ulcus, later transformed into Windir. After the death of front man Valfar, the remaining members continued under the moniker Vreid. And this new constellation has now released its seventh studio album, called ‘Sólverv’. The successor of ’Welcome Farewell’ (2013) has Norwegian lyrics again and this opus is inspired by the region where composer/bassist Hvall and his companions were born and raised: the breathtaking Sogndal in Norway where one can find the longest fjord of the country.
The chill and otherworldly beauty of nature resounds in the icy guitar foundation of Vreid. Yet the band always presents a kind of catchiness; that’s why the strong melodies keep spinning in your head after few spins. Consequently the term black-‘n’-roll can still be used. The compositions are long, going from six to nine minutes, but they are minutely crafted. At the majestic beginning of ‘Haust’ (‘Herfst’) one can hear compelling, razor-sharp guitar sounds, but soon the band cuts loose and we are overwhelmed by fervent blackish metal. The raspy voice of Sture should be a familiar element. But no Vreid record without soaring keyboards – particularly mellotron leaps to the eye – supporting the tightness and solos in a wonderful manner. Again rocking with momentum, they continue with the raucousness of Norwegian landscapes in the title track and ‘Geitaskadl’ and in the latter one warm-hearted organ prevail. However, the stunner of this album appears to be Ætti Sitt Fjedl’, kicking off as smooth rocking song and suddenly surprising us with fetching clean chants. Breaks with keyboards, a fast and furious guitar solo and lovely guitar runs with innovative rhythm patterns make it an ultimate enjoyable listening happening.
‘Når Byane Brenn’ covers us in the darkness of a winter’s scenery with menacing strings, tribal drums and a superior scream that leads to ferocious blastbeats. The epic timbre shines through again in the next verse, surrounded by energetic guitar solos. That’s how Vreid always creates a bridge between blackened fury and classic heavy metal. After the tempestuous ‘Storm Frå Vest’ the death bell tolls and the alarm siren resounds in ‘Fridom Med Daudens Klang’, in which atmospheric parts and venomous heaviness create another highlight to emphasize the contrasts in the music of these grand epic Norse musicians. Do not only listen to Vreid, let yourself go in this vortex musical adventure with extremely inventive textures. A new top notch album of this eclectic band!

Ooit was er Ulcus, daarna getransformeerd in Windir. Na de dood van frontman Valfar gingen de overige leden door onder de naam Vreid. En deze nieuwste constellatie is ook al toe aan het zevende studioalbum, met als titel ‘Sólverv’. De opvolger van ’Welcome Farewell’ (2013) is terug in de Noorse taal gezongen en dit opus is geïnspireerd door de streek waar componist/bassist Hvall en zijn kompanen opgroeiden: het adembenemende Sogndal in Noorwegen waar de langste fjord van dit land gelegen is.
De kilte en onwereldse schoonheid van de natuur weerklinkt in de ijselijke gitaarbasis van Vreid. Toch heeft de band altijd een zekere catchiness gehanteerd, zodat je na enkele luisterbeurten met de sterke melodieën in je hoofd blijft ronddwalen. Vandaar dat de term black-‘n-roll nog steeds gehandhaafd mag worden. De composities zijn lang, van zes tot negen minuten, maar ze zijn minutieus opgebouwd. Bij het majestueuze begin van ‘Haust’ (‘Herfst’) weerklinken slepende, scherpe gitaren, maar spoedig steekt de band een tandje bij en worden we overweldigd door vinnige black metal. De rasperige stem van Sture vormt daarbij een overbekend element. Maar geen Vreid-plaat zonder zwevende keyboards, met name mellotron springt in het oog, welke de strakheid en solo’s op verrukkelijke wijze ondersteund. Nog meer rockend en stuwend vervolgt men met een ruwheid van het Noorse landschap in het titelnummer en ‘Geitaskadl’ waarbij in dit laatste nummer warme orgelklanken even de boventoon voeren. De klapper van dit album is echter ‘Ætti Sitt Fjedl’ dat lekker rockend van start gaat en verrast met aanstekelijke cleane zangpartijen. Breaks met keyboards, een vurige gitaarsolo en fervente gitaarloopjes met innovatieve ritmiek maken dit een feest om naar te luisteren.
‘Når Byane Brenn’ hult ons in de duisternis van het winterse landschap met dreigende strijkers, tribale drums en een superieure kreet die leidt tot verwoestende blastbeats. Het verhalende timbre schemert echter weer door in de volgende strofe, omgeven door energieke gitaarsolo’s. Zo slaat Vreid immer een brug tussen zwartgeblakerde furie en klassieke heavy metal. Na het stormachtige ‘Storm Frå Vest’ luidt de dodenklok en weerklinkt de alarmsirene in ‘Fridom Med Daudens Klang’ waarin atmosferische stukken en venijnige heftigheid nog een hoogtepunt creëren om de contrasten in de muziek van deze groots epische Noren nog even in het zonnetje te zetten. Naar Vreid moet je niet enkel luisteren, best laat je je meeslepen in dit wervelende muzikale avontuur dat bijzonder inventief opgebouwd is. Een nieuw topalbum van deze eclectische band!
