W.A.S.P.: Golgotha

W.A.S.P. entered our musical universe in the eighties with party hits like ‘I Wanna Be Somebody’, ‘Blind In Texas’ and more of those sing along hymns. Later it got way more interesting music-wise, at the times of concept albums like ‘The Headless Children’ and ‘The Crimson Idol’. After that we lost a bit track of Black Lawless in our hunt for more extreme metal genres, but he is still in the running. With ‘Golgotha’ we even learn that his current albums are worth some praise.
In the meantime band leader Blackie has transformed from a party animal into a devoted Christian – and you notice that in the lyrics – but it is a fact that a longer hiatus between albums turned into a right move. ‘Golgotha’ goes on along the lines of former albums ‘Dominator’ (2007) and ‘Babylon (2009) but sounds just a little bit more inspired and fervent. Lots of praise goes to lead guitarist Doug Blair who really does a brilliant job.
The album kicks off with three up-tempo songs in a very familiar W.A.S.P. manner: this means the raspy voice of our front man, up-tempo rock with fine guitar ornaments and a huge catchiness. During ‘Last Runaway’ we think of Meat Loaf, during ‘Shotgun’ The Who pops up in our mind. Same goes for ‘Hero Of The World’ in which the guitar sound is reminiscent of Pete Townsend. It might be the reason why Blackie himself says that this album is deeply rooted in the seventies. However, the more sensitive songs turn out to be the best ones, although any mellifluent pathos is present. Magnificent is the in blues drenched ‘Miss You’ (those solos!) and ‘Hero Of The World’. Some Weltschmerz Erlebnis is not that far away and you have to like the idiosyncratic vocals, yet the high skilfulness of the musicians reign. We add the tight-as-he…aven ‘Slaves Of The New World’ and the epic ‘Eyes Of The Maker’ to our list of favourite tracks. By the way, during the professing ‘Golgotha’ we got goose-bumps of the guitar solo in which you can hear that Doug Blair originates from the David Gilmour school. Thus loads of familiar sounds on ‘Golgotha’, yet way much better than we expected.

W.A.S.P. liet voor het eerst van zich horen in de jaren tachtig met partyhits als ‘I Wanna Be Somebody’, ‘Blind In Texas’ en meer van die meebrulhymnen. Later werd het muzikaal een pak interessanter ten tijde van conceptalbums als ‘The Headless Children’ en ‘The Crimson Idol’. Daarna verloren we Blackie Lawless een beetje uit het oog in onze zoektocht naar extremere vormen van metal, maar hij maakt nog altijd albums. Met ‘Golgotha’ leren we zelfs dat die nog ruim de moeite zijn.
Intussen is bandleider Blackie getransformeerd van party animal tot devote Christen – en dat merk je in de teksten – maar het feit dat er ditmaal een langere periode tussen de albums was, blijkt een goede beslissing. ‘Golgotha’ trekt de lijn door van voorgaande albums ‘Dominator’ (2007) en ‘Babylon’ (2009) maar klinkt net iets meer geïnspireerd en vuriger. Veel is te danken aan lead gitarist Doug Blair welke een waarlijk schitterende prestatie levert.
Het album vangt aan met drie uptempo songs in heel vertrouwde W.A.S.P. stijl: dit wil zeggen de rasperige stem van de frontman, uptempo rock met leuke gitaarornamenten en een grote toegankelijkheid. Bij ‘Last Runaway’ moeten we stiekem aan Meat Loaf denken en bij ‘Shotgun’ aan The Who. Dit laatste item duikt weer op tijdens ‘Hero Of The World’. Met name het gitaargeluid is debet aan Pete Townsend en dat mag verklaren waarom de heer Blackie zelve meldt dat dit een plaat is diep geënt op de jaren zeventig. Wij vinden de tragere songs de beste, ook al loert daar soms enige honingzoete pathos om de hoek. Prachtig is immers het in blues gedrenkte ‘Miss You’ (die solo’s!) en ‘Hero Of The World’. Enige weltschmerz erlebnis is soms niet ver weg en van de zang moet je houden, edoch het hoogstaande kunnen der muzikanten zegeviert. We voegen ook nog het stuwende ‘Slaves Of The New World’ en het epische ‘Eyes Of The Maker’ toe aan onze favoriete tracks. Trouwens, tijdens het belijdende ‘Golgotha’ kregen we gewoon kippenvel van de gitaarsolo waarin je hoort dat Doug Blair uit de school van David Gilmour komt. Veel vertrouwde geluiden op ‘Golgotha’, maar veel beter dan we verwacht hadden.
