AVATARIUM: The Girl With The Raven Mask

In 2013 Avatarium happened to be a true discovery. After they raised our interest with an EP ‘Moonhorse’, they released their self-titled debut album which promptly ended up at number one of my list of the year. Avatarium came into being when Leif Edling (Candlemass mastermind) and Marcus Jidell (ex-Evergrey and solo artist) started to work out some ideas of Edling. Lasse Sköld (Tiamat) took place behind the drums; the vintage keyboards are coming from Carl Westholm. Yet the biggest surprise for everybody appeared to be the unknown female singer Jennie-Ann Smith. She turned into a proper revelation and consequently she is more featured on the sophomore album ‘The Girl With The Raven Mask’, now that the material has been penned with her in mind.
The existence of Avatarium spread like wildfire in the metal scène. This happened while they are playing doom metal with a proper blues injection, usually a style which is only welcomed with jubilance in limited circles. The thing that Avatarium distinguishes from others is the fact that they write accessible, amazing songs. Without getting ultra heavy they play with the emotions of the listener by miniature stories with huge impact on your imagination. In addition to the expressive voice of Jennie-Ann (she sounds as your fragile girl next door sometimes, but on the other hand she can sing as a self-willed woman who knows what she wants), the guitar solos of Jidell are true ear-candy. His empyrean, yet sometimes fervent style gives the songs a far-reaching integrity, straight from the heart, all this on a bed of vintage Hammond bravura.
The band shifts from catchy, straight forward songs to contemplative emotions. For example, the title track and ‘Run Killer Run’ are paradigms of smooth, catchy rock, but the rest digs deeper. The second song for instance, ‘The January Sea’, is drenched in ponderous doom riffs. The vocal parts contrast nicely with it, while Jidell adds his mind-blowing guitar skills. Slow and compelling it gets in ‘Pearls And Coffins’, a song in which it is a pleasure to dive into the darker side of life. Poetic and nearly naïve it gets in ‘Hypnotized’ with fluttering guitar sounds and gloomy organ. The powerful sung ‘Ghostlight’ flirts with Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) and Black Sabbath (reminds me a bit of ‘Electric Funeral’ in some parts). The construction of a railway to the North of Sweden has demanded a lot of suffering and hard labour from the people and that lives on in the memories of Jidell during the captivating ‘Iron Mule’. With a sensitive note we occlude this album. One more time we close our eyes to enjoy piano, introvert chants, heavy riffs and bluesy soloing during ‘The Master Thief’. The surprising effect has made place for solid art. Avatarium has an ultimate signature sound. The fact that they can have profit from the vintage boom is nice and well deserved. This is no recycling; this is a welcome enrichment of the genre.

In 2013 was Avatarium een ware ontdekking. Nadat ze onze aandacht getrokken hadden met de ep ‘Moonhorse’ brachten zij het titelloze debuutalbum uit dat prompt mijn jaarlijst aanvoerde. Avatarium ontstond toen Leif Edling (Candlemass brein) en Marcus Jidell (ex-Evergrey en soloartiest) samen ideeën van Edling begonnen uit te werken. Achter de drums nam Lasse Sköld (Tiamat) plaats; de vintage keyboards komen van Carl Westholm. Maar de grootste verrassing voor iedereen was de onbekende zangeres Jennie-Ann Smith. Zij bleek een ware revelatie en krijgt dan ook meer ruimte op dit tweede album ‘The Girl With The Raven Mask’, nu het materiaal geschreven is met haar indachtig.
Het bestaan van Avatarium verspreidde zich als een lopend vuurtje doorheen de metalscène. En dit terwijl ze doom metal met een flinke scheut blues spelen, normaal een stijl die in beperkte kring bejubeld wordt. Wat Avatarium onderscheidt is dat ze toegankelijke, fantastische songs schrijven. Zonder echt heavy te worden bespelen ze de gevoelens van de luisteraar met miniatuurverhalen met groot inlevingsvermogen. Naast de expressieve stem van Jennie-Ann (zij klinkt als het breekbare buurmeisje, maar anderzijds ook als een kordate dame die weet wat ze wil) zijn de gitaarsolo’s van Jidell waarlijk een lust voor het oor. Zijn gevleugelde, maar soms ook vurige stijl geeft de songs een verregaande integriteit, recht uit het hart. Dit alles op een bedje van vintage Hammond klanken.
De band wisselt toegankelijke, hapklare songs af met beschouwende emoties. Zo is het titelnummer en ook ‘Run Killer Run’ een toonbeeld van vlotte rock, maar de rest graaft toch wat dieper. Als tweede song is er bijvoorbeeld ‘The January Sea’, gedrenkt in zware doom riffs. De zangpartijen contrasteren daar mooi mee, terwijl Jidell zijn geestverruimende klanken toevoegt. Traag en meeslepend wordt het in ‘Pearls And Coffins’, een song waar je met plezier de donkere zijde van het leven induikt. Poëtisch en bijna naïef klinkt ‘Hypnotized’ met uitwaaierende gitaarklanken en duister orgel. Het krachtig gezongen ‘Ghostlight’ flirt met Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) en Black Sabbath (doet me wat aan ‘Electric Funeral’ denken in sommige passages). De aanleg van een spoorlijn naar het Noorden van Zweden heeft veel opoffering geëist van de bevolking en leeft verder in de herinneringen van Jidell tijdens het beklijvende ‘Iron Mule’. Met een gevoelige noot wordt dit album afgesloten. Nog eenmaal sluiten we de ogen om piano, ingetogen zang, zware riffs en bluesy solo’s op gitaar te ondergaan tijdens ‘The Master Thief’. Het verrassingseffect heeft plaats gemaakt voor solide kunst. Een uiterst persoonlijke sound heeft Avatarium. Dat ze hiermee kunnen aansluiten bij de heersende vintage rage is mooi meegenomen en we gunnen dit hen van harte. Dit is namelijk geen herkauwen, maar een verrijking van het genre.
