MELTED SPACE: The Great Lie

In October Melted Space will hit the road with Leaves’ Eyes and Diabolus In Musica. That is perfectly on time to support their fourth studio album ‘The Great Lie’ and give it a push. The Frenchman Pierre Le Pape happens to be the moving spirit of this megalomania project with numerous guest vocalists and guest musicians. Really, this cast is as impressive as the ones from Ayreon or Avantasia, since we can find the next artists from very different styles among the guest vocalists: Mikael Stanne (Dark Tranquillity), Kobi Farhi (Orphaned Land), Niklas Kvarforth (Shining – Sweden), Ailyn (Sirenia), Mariangela Demurtas (Tristania), David Vincent (Morbid Angel), Attila Csihar (Mayhem), Manuel Mundoz (The Old Dead Tree) and even Arjen Lucassen himself on guitar, dulcimer and synthesizer. Quite a prestige, isn’t it? In addition the orchestral parts are played by the famous Philharmonic Orchestra of Prague (CZ).
A rock opera in which dialogues are featured is obviously followed with the lyrics within reach by the undersigned. We can assure you that it is recommended to do this, in order to have maximum satisfaction of this admirably performed record. Pierre also succeeded in truly engaging the suitable voices for this - again - by Dante’s Divine Comedy inspired disc. The surrounding music is accessible metal, regaled with wealthy symphonic overtones, but in four songs also beautiful guitar solos by – what did you think? – guest guitarists. Of course the matter of ‘good and bad’ plays an important role and for instance, the sick vocals of Kvarforth are replied by angelic chants of ladies. David Vincent excels in juicy rolling grunts and Mikael Stanne sings emotive and clean as well as raucous. Tracks that mostly leap to the eye are the eight minutes long showpiece ‘No Need To Fear’ in which the sung dialogues of Demurtas are contrasted by the ominous spoken parts of the Mayhem front man, sturdy grunts with blastbeats by David Vincent and the well-known growl of Stanne. ‘Terrible Fight’ verges to thrash metal. The ballad ‘A God Is Dead’, completely sung by Manuel Mundoz (The Old Dead Tree), shines a different light on the singer, but is quite mellifluent. One of the best songs is ‘Trust & Betrayal’: fetching yet rough. Beautiful is also the contrast between the serene sweet vocals of Kobi Farhi and the extraordinary vocal performance of Kvarforth. The song in which Arjen Lucassen’s solos appear is called ‘The One Who Lost The Faith’ and happens to be heavily symphonic. On top of this we have a female choir that contributes few lines now and then. It goes without saying that any bombast and loads of drama are present, yet ‘The Great Lie’ shows an inviting accessibility. Those who are in for a soundtrack off and on, should really check this out.

In oktober gaat Melted Space de baan op met Leaves’ Eyes en Diabolus In Musica. Dat is netjes op tijd om het vierde studioalbum ‘The Great Lie’ een zetje te geven. De Fransman Pierre Le Pape is de bezieler van dit megalomane project met tal van gastvocalisten en gastmuzikanten. Werkelijk, dit is even groots opgezet als Ayreon en Avantasia, want tussen de gastvocalisten vinden we de volgende artiesten van heel verschillend pluimage: Mikael Stanne (Dark Tranquillity), Kobi Farhi (Orphaned Land), Niklas Kvarforth (Shining – Zweden), Ailyn (Sirenia), Mariangela Demurtas (Tristania), David Vincent (Morbid Angel), Attila Csihar (Mayhem), Manuel Mundoz (The Old Dead Tree) en ook Arjen Lucassen himself op gitaar, dulcimer en synthesizer. Zeg nu zelf, dat is niet niks. Bovendien worden de orkestpartijen ditmaal gespeeld door het befaamde Filharmonisch Orkest van Praag (CZ).
Een rockopera waarin de dialogen centraal staan wordt ten huize hier natuurlijk gevolgd met tekst erbij. We kunnen je verzekeren dat dit een vereiste is om ten volle van dit bewonderenswaardig uitgevoerde album te genieten. Pierre is er ook in geslaagd om werkelijk de geknipte stemmen te vinden voor alle rollen in deze alweer op de Goddelijke Komedie van Dante geënte schijf. De begeleidende muziek is vlotte metal, overgoten met een rijke symfonische saus, maar in een viertal songs ook mooie gitaarsolo’s door – wat dacht je? – gastgitaristen. Het goede en het kwade spelen hierbij uiteraard weer een grote rol en de ziekelijke stem van Kvarforth wordt bijvoorbeeld gerepliceerd door lieflijke zang van dames; David Vincent laat zijn grunts sappig rollen en Mikael Stanne zingt zowel aandoenlijk clean als ruw. Meest in het oog springende tracks zijn het acht minuten durende paradepaardje ‘No Need To Fear’ waar de gezongen dialogen van Demurtas gecontrasteerd worden door duister gesproken stukken van de Mayhem frontman, ferme grunts met blastbeats van David Vincent en de welbekende grunt van Stanne. ‘Terrible Fight’ neigt hakkend naar thrash metal. De door Manuel Mundoz (The Old Dead Tree) ballade ‘A God Is Dead’ werpt een ander licht op de zanger, maar ik vind het vrij honingzoet. Eén van de beste songs is ‘Trust & Betrayal’: aanstekelijk en toch ruig. Mooi is ook het contrast tussen de zalvende zang van Kobi Farhi en de ziekelijke stembuigingen van Kvarforth. Het nummer waarin Arjen Lucassen schittert met enige solo’s is ‘The One Who Lost The Faith’ en dat is zwaar symfonisch. Er is ook nog een feeëriek vrouwenkoor dat af en toe enkele lijntjes zingt. Het hoeft geen betoog dat enige bombast en een lading dramatiek aanwezig is, maar toch behoudt ‘The Great Lie’ een grote toegankelijkheid. Wie wel een soundtrack op zijn tijd lust, moet dit dus zeker onderzoeken.
