OPERATION: MINDCRIME: The Key

For more than 30 years, Geoff Tate has been a frontman with a voice that made an indelible stamp on metal. Next to Queensrÿche, the man made already some solo albums and now he has left that iconic band. He starts a musical project with a bunch of talented musicians under the moniker of the album that made Queensrÿche big. Ambitious project it is, for ‘The Key’ is the start of a trilogy.
The biography states that they continue in the spirit of the original ‘Mindcrime’ and there are indeed similarities: Tate himself of course, the interludes with sounds like a closing door and some background talk welding the songs together are here too, the catchy ‘Re-Inventing’ could have been on the original and what to think of ‘The Stranger’ (pretty daring with semi rap and almost industrial beat)? A wink to ‘Eyes Of A Stranger’?
‘Choices’ warms us up, going crescendo all the way, while we hear that Geoff isn’t the only singer, though the input of the three others is quite limited throughout the album.
After that ‘Burn’ shimmers with restrained power and the sparkling work of both guitarists. ‘Ready To Fly’ is a calmer piece, after which ‘Life Or Death?’ is sturdy with vocal hooks. ‘Hearing Voice’ is the most heavy chunk so far, after which the gloomy ‘On Queue’ gurgles slowly along while saxophone creeps in towards the end. After another quiet song with particular tone colour of –probably- the dulcimer, the closing one is majestically heavy with again saxophone input, almost good for goose bumps.
Very diverse in styles, rich in diversity of arrangements and makes me curious for what the second part will bring, even if the display of creativity resulted in something pretty different from the ‘original’.

Sinds meer dan 30 jaar is Geoff Tate een frontman met een stem die zijn onuitwisbare stempel heeft gedrukt op metal. Naast Queensrÿche heeft de man ook solo albums gemaakt en nu hij zijn iconische band verlaten heeft, start hij een muzikaal project met een pak getalenteerde muzikanten onder de naam van het album dat Queensrÿche groot maakte. Ambitieus project bovendien, want ‘The Key’ is het begin van een trilogie.
De bio stelt dat hier verder gewerkt wordt in de geest van de originele ‘Mindcrime’ en er zijn inderdaad gelijkenissen: Tate zelf natuurlijk, de interludia met geluidjes als een sluitende deur en gepraat op de achtergrond die de nummers aan elkaar smeden zijn hier ook, het catchy ‘Re-Inventing’ had er toen tussen kunnen staan en wat met ‘The stanger’ (vrij gewaagd met semi rap en quasi industrial beat)? Een knipoog naar ‘Eyes Of A Stranger’?
‘Choices’ is een opwarmertje dat crescendo gaat, waarin we horen dat Geoff niet de enige zanger is, al blijft het aandeel van de drie anderen doorheen het album beperkt.
Daarna zindert ‘Burn’ van ingehouden kracht en spetterende werk van de twee gitaristen.
‘Ready To Fly’ is een rustpunt, waarna ‘Life Or Death?’ stevig is met vocale hook. ‘Hearing Voice’ is de meest heavy brok dusver, waarna het sombere ‘On Queue’ langzaam verder kabbelt terwijl saxofoon er naar het eind insluipt. Na nog een rustiger nummer met bijzondere klank van – waarschijnlijk - de dulcimer, is de afsluiter majestueus heavy met opnieuw saxofoon inbreng, goed voor bijna kippenvel.
Erg afwisselend qua stijl, rijk in diversiteit van arrangementen en maakt me benieuwd naar het tweede luik, zelfs als het vertoon van creativiteit iets vrij verschillend van het ‘origineel’ heeft opgeleverd.
