NHOR: Momenta Quintae Essentiae

After releasing his collected works as a magnificent artbook (three albums and an EP) in August 2013, Nhor realized that an era in the existence of Nhor had ended. This English one-man-project has always breathed the admiration and respect for nature, but now Nhor decided to go to the essence. That explains the title, since the fifth essence once was considered as the essence of nature, the state of ultimate blessed entities. Nhor does not see this album as a collection of songs, but as a gathering of spaces and thoughts. Very ethereal it is, searching for spiritual fulfilment.
The successor of ’Within The Darkness Between The Starlight’ is anything but an atmospheric black metal record, one can rather speak of what they call neofolk/ambient these days. This time the music is only based on acoustic guitars and (mostly) piano. No drums or percussion either. In some of the songs we hear any sporadically ethereal chants, but the voice is more an additional instrument than that we can speak of proper vocal lines. As an opening track, the seven minutes long piano only of ‘Luna Oritur’ might be a bit too long, but the next songs build up an atmosphere that haunts you, also with acoustic guitars and during ‘Contra Vectum’ and the soaring ‘Sic Praterit Nox’ some graceful strings. A song like ‘Nosce Te Ipsum’ has a serene, nearly sacred vibe and the crystal clear guitar sound reminds us of the acoustic songs of Empyrium. The melodies are wonderful and introvert contemplative, while melancholy and standing in awe for nature go hand in hand. This is a very calm, but deep-draught album, perfect to listen to during these dark days in autumn and winter time. Beautiful and quiescent.

Nadat Nhor in augustus 2013 zijn verzamelde werken (drie albums en een EP) had uitgebracht, gebundeld in een prachtig artbook, realiseerde hij zich dat er een periode in het bestaan van de band was afgesloten. Dit Engelse eenmansproject was altijd vol bewondering en eerbied voor de natuur, maar nu besloot Nhor tot de essentie door te dringen. Vandaar de titel, want de vijfde essentie werd ooit beschouwd als de essentie van de natuur, de staat van opperste gelukzaligheid. Nhor beschouwt dit album niet als een collectie songs, maar als een verzameling gedachten en ruimtes. Zeer etherisch allemaal, op zoek naar een spirituele vervulling.
De opvolger van ’Within The Darkness Between The Starlight’ is echter allesbehalve een atmosferische black metal plaat, maar wat men tegenwoordig neofolk/ambient noemt. Ditmaal is de muziek enkel gestoeld op akoestische gitaren en (veel) piano. Ook geen drums of percussie dus. In enkele songs horen we sporadische wat etherische gezangen, eerder met de stem als bijkomend instrument, dan als vocale melodieën. Om te openen is zeven minuten lang enkel piano misschien wat lang (‘Luna Oritur’), maar de volgende songs brengen je echt in stemming, met ook akoestische gitaren en tijdens ‘Contra Ventum’ en het zwevende ‘Sic Praterit Nox’ wat sierlijke strijkers. Een song als ‘Nosce Te Ipsum’ heeft een serene, haast gewijde sfeer over zich en het heldere gitaarwerk doet aan de akoestische stukken van Empyrium denken. De melodieën zijn wondermooi en introvert beschouwend, terwijl weemoed en ontzag hand in hand gaan. Dit is een erg kalme, maar rijke plaat en perfect om naar te luisteren tijdens de donkere dagen in deze herfst en winter. Mooi en rustig.
