SKEPTICAL MINDS: Omega Thanatos

The third full CD by Skeptical Minds is not just another CD. The band worked together with Alain Poncelet who designed an original comic book as a companion to the CD. As a matter of fact it was not a matter of ‘first the CD and then the book’ or vice versa, but both were developed together. The result is a beautiful comic book and a great album that brings the band to the next level.
Their industrial/electro-metal is very accessible and the beautiful voice of singer Karolina Pacan brings a lightness to the songs that makes everything very digestible. The sound of the band is also made richer through the addition of extra instruments. The songs and the book tell a story about loss, fear and death, but also about hope and the search for meaning and understanding. With or without the book, this album has a very nice flow and a dark glowing sound that is enlightened by the fascinating voice of Karolina. A song like ‘The Sign’ is world class!

De derde full cd van het Brussels-Waalse Skeptical Minds is het resultaat van een ambitieus project. De plaat komt niet uit in een gewoon formaat, maar onder de vorm van een stripverhaal waar de cd wordt bijgevoegd en is voortgesproten uit de intense samenwerking tussen de band en ‘dark art’ tekenaar Alain Poncelet. Eerst en vooral is de plaat muzikaal een sterk staaltje vlot beluisterbare industrial- en electro metal. De composities passen perfect bij de wat folky stem van Karolina Pacan en er wordt hier en daar beroep gedaan op tal van instrumenten om de nummers extra diepgang te geven.
De band weet een uitstekende productie neer te zetten die tegelijk intensiteit uitstraalt zonder je plat te slaan met een ‘in your face’ geluid dat na een eerste beluistering al gaat vervelen. Er werd gekozen voor diepgang, nuance, maar ook voor kracht, expressie en heavy gitaren daar waar het past. Dit episch werk is ingedeeld in elf songs en wordt complementair gevisualiseerd door een uitstekend boekwerk met een sprekend stripverhaal. Het is een verhaal over verlies, wanhoop, dood, maar ook over hoop, zoeken naar zin en hunker naar begrip. Ook los van het stripverhaal staat de muziek als een huis en heeft de cd een uitzonderlijke flow die ons bij elke beluistering opnieuw meevoert in een donkere gloed van klanken en melodieën waarin licht wordt gebracht door de fascinerende stem van Karolina Pacan. Een productie van eigen bodem om fier op te zijn. En ‘The Sign’ is een wereldnummer!
