DRACONIAN: Sovran

After the release of the magnificent opus ’A Rose For The Apocalypse’ (2011), we heard strikingly few of our favourite Swedish doom/gothic outfit Draconian. Then we were struck by the message that female singer Lisa Johansson had left the band to focus on her family. A long search for suitable replacement ended up in South Africa, where Heike Langhans decided to start a new life in Sweden. Of course it was most of all her top notch voice that tipped the scales in this recruitment. This line-up change is one of the reasons why there is a gap of four years between the predecessor and ‘Sovran’ while the band did not play live either.
Fortunately in the end everything went good. We did not have any doubts about that, since the signature Draconian sound has always been defined by the compositions of guitarist Johan Ericson and the poetic lyrics of vocalist Anders Jacobsson. When we should not know that Lisa had left the band, they could have fooled us by saying that Lisa still sings here. The fact is, the timbre of new singer Heike Langhans is quite identical to her predecessor: calm, pure and with longing melancholy. That’s how ‘Sovran’ offers us nine tracks, going from six to nine minutes length, that lead you into far-reaching gloominess, an orgy of melodic leads and the contrast between the dreamy, bit sad female vocals and the juicy, sturdy grunts of Anders. This is a manifest of eminent doom/gothic metal like only Draconian can create. From the second song ‘The Wretched Tide’ on, we also hear captivating spoken passages full of passion and fatalism from time to time, while violin is incidentally assimilated in the empyrean textures. Pointing out highlights is impossible, since the level is constantly ultra high. Just listen to ‘Stellar Tombs’ with its tight accelerations or to the feeling of awe for the universe in ‘No Lonelier Star’. Actually this album happens to be a call for more consciousness about our affinity with the cosmic vastness.
Although the pace is generally slow, fervent parts are interwoven where they stir up the fire, yet always melodious and with the emphasis on dark atmospheres and moods. ‘Rivers Between Us’ is regaled with clean vocals of Daniel Anghede (Crippled Black Phoenix), but the spoken parts sound really dramatic here. After the compelling final song ‘The Marriage Of Attaris’ we realize that we have been out of this world for a while, wallowing in the bitter sweet romanticism of this exceptional band. In cooperation with top producers as David Castillo and Jens Bogren, the production is perfect. This is not only a must have for fans of My Dying Bride or Saturnus and gothic aficionados, but for everybody who has a soft spot for magnificent emotional music.

Na de release van het uitstekende opus ’A Rose For The Apocalypse’ (2011) hoorden we opvallend weinig van ons favoriete Zweedse doom/gothic gezelschap Draconian. Toen kwam het bericht dat zangeres Lisa Johansson de band verlaten had om zich op het familiale leven toe te leggen. Een lange zoektocht naar de geschikte vervanging eindigde in Zuid-Afrika (!) waar ene Heike Langhans bereid was om een nieuw leven te starten in Zweden. Maar natuurlijk was het vooral haar topstem die de doorslag gaf bij de aanwerving. Deze bezettingswijziging is één van de redenen waarom er vier jaar tijd ligt tussen de voorganger en ‘Sovran’ en de band ook niet te zien was op het podium.
Gelukkig is alles goed gekomen. We twijfelden daar niet aan want het Draconian geluid wordt immers bepaald door de composities van gitarist Johan Ericson en de dichterlijke teksten van zanger Anders Jacobsson. Wanneer we niet stellig wisten dat Lisa uit de band gestapt is, dan had men ons kunnen diets maken dat zij dit ingezongen heeft. Het timbre van nieuwe zangeres Heike Langhans is namelijk vrij identiek aan haar voorgangster: beheerst, zuiver en met smachtende weemoed. Zo biedt ‘Sovran’ ons negen songs van zes tot negen minuten die je meevoeren in een verregaande melancholie, een orgie aan melodieuze leads en het contrast tussen de dromerige, droeve vrouwenzang en de sappige, forse grunts van Anders. Dit is een manifest van hoogwaardige doom/gothic metal zoals alleen Draconian dat kan. Vanaf het tweede nummer ‘The Wretched Tide’ horen we ook beklijvend gesproken passages vol passie en fatalisme nu en dan, terwijl viool heel sporadisch in de zwevende textuur verwerkt is. Hoogtepunten aanduiden is overbodig daar het niveau constant torenhoog is. Luister maar eens naar ‘Stellar Tombs’ met zijn strakke acceleraties of naar het ontzag voor het universum in ‘No Lonelier Star’, want dit album is ten slotte een oproep tot meer bewustzijn van kosmische verbondenheid.
Hoewel het tempo overwegend traag is, zijn pittige stukken ingebouwd waar men het vuur opstookt, maar steeds melodieus en met een grote aandacht voor de duistere atmosfeer. ‘Rivers Between Us’ wordt opgesmukt door cleane zang van Daniel Anghede (Crippled Black Phoenix), maar de gesproken stukken klinken hier bijzonder dramatisch. Na het aangrijpende slotnummer ‘The Marriage Of Attaris’ beseffen we dat we even van deze wereld weg geweest zijn om ons te wentelen in de bitterzoete romantiek van deze uitzonderlijke band. In samenwerking met topproducers als David Castillo en Jens Bogren is de productie perfect. Dit is niet alleen verplichte kost voor fans van My Dying Bride of Saturnus en gotische liefhebbers, maar voor iedereen die houdt van prachtige emotionele muziek.
