NUCLEUS TORN: Neon Light Eternal

Amply a year after the enigmatic, captivating ’Street Lights Fail’, as planned, ‘Neon Light Eternal’ is released; the twin album born out of the same writing sessions, but now it is completely finished by mastermind Fredy Schnyder. Both albums can hardly exist apart, the one complements the other. The approach is the same: Fredy plays most of the instruments, recorded and produced everything. Anna Murphy (Eluveitie) sings, Alain Ackermann behind the drums and guest musicians on flute and violin. And it speaks for itself that ‘Neon Light Eternal’ turned into an exquisite musical experience that grandly distinguishes itself from the rest we hear in this sublunary.
Three lengthy songs can be found on the album and it starts right away with the extensive ‘A Declaration Of Mistrust’ that takes nearly twenty-three minutes from your earthly existence. But it is well-spend time if you listen to music with an open vision. This album is again a mix of classic, avant-garde, jazz, folk and metal, but most of all it feels very progressive. Really, progrock fans will have a glorious time diving into this. Anna Murphy’s vocals once again send shivers down my spine, we already notice that at the beginning of the song. Resigned, unworldly, with an undercurrent of passion. She is supported by beautiful acoustic guitars. Then drums join in, leading us through soaring passages with Mellotron and guitars with an ultimate lovely character. The atmosphere abruptly changes after eight minutes with bone-crushing riffs, but vocals remain empyrean. A bit later we have some flute passages sounding extra proggy, but also very quiescent moments creating a kind of void. Melancholic chants lead towards the final outburst with reigning Mellotron. This is magnificent!
We are suddenly confronted with the ferocious riffs of ‘Nothing Between You And Death’. Anna sings through it in a very calm way. Some dissonant sounds are noticeable in this musical palette and one weird drawn out guitar note represents a solo. On the tones of relaxed lounge vocals we glide above earthly sufferings, just like in our dreams. Beautiful contrasts between cautious guitar- and piano sounds and the eruption that follows. In ‘Street Lights Fail’, the song entitled as the previous album, vocals are sometimes dramatic, yet not pathetic. Here an amazing violin part leaps to the eye in the midst of quite peaceful music. Last time we wrote that ‘Neon Light Eternal’ would be the end. Now it is announced that Nucleus Torn will be put on ice for a decennium. This is a grandiose final chord of an exceptional musical project. But the real final chord happens to be the artbook ‘Blowing Up The Entire World (Explosions 1997-2015)’.

Ruim een jaar na het enigmatische, beklijvende ’Street Lights Fail’ verschijnt, zoals gepland, ‘Neon Light Eternal’, het tweelingalbum dat ontstaan is tijdens dezelfde schrijfsessies, maar nu volledig afgewerkt is door mastermind Fredy Schnyder. Het ene album kan niet zonder het andere, dit is complementair aan vorig album. De aanpak is hetzelfde: Fredy speelt de meeste instrumenten, deed opnamen en productie, Anna Murphy (Eluveitie) zingt, Alain Ackermann achter de drums en gastmuzikanten op viool en dwarsfluit. En vanzelfsprekend is ‘Neon Light Eternal’ weer een brok muziek die zich uitermate onderscheidt van de rest in dit ondermaanse.
Drie lange songs trekken aan ons voorbij en het begint al meteen met het lange ‘A Declaration Of Mistrust’ dat bijna drieëntwintig minuten van je aardse bestaan weg hapt. Maar het is welbestede tijd als je met een open visie naar muziek kunt luisteren. Dit album is namelijk weer een mix van klassiek, avant-garde, jazz, folk en metal, maar komt vooral progressief over. Progrock fans zullen er een vette kluif aan hebben. Anna Murphy zingt weer rillingenverwekkend, dat merken we al in het begin van de song. Berustend, onwerelds, met toch die onderhuidse passie. Mooie akoestische gitaren begeleiden haar. De drums vallen in en leiden ons doorheen zwevende passages met mellotron en gitaar, haast lieflijk te noemen. De stemming slaat na acht minuten om met beenharde riffs, maar de zang blijft zwevend. Later zijn er passages met fluit die uitermate proggy overkomen, maar eveneens verstilde momenten met een zekere leegte passeren de revue. De weemoedige zang leidt naar een finale uitbarsting waar mellotron weer heerst. Dit is prachtig!
We worden bruusk uit de droom geholpen door de woedende riffs van ‘Nothing Between You And Death’. Anna zingt er kalm doorheen. Enige dissonantie valt te spotten in dit muzikaal kader en een vreemd aangehouden gitaarnoot vertegenwoordigt een solo. Op de tonen van relaxte lounge zang glijden we boven aardse beslommeringen als in onze dromen. Mooie contrasten tussen aarzelende gitaar- en pianoklanken en de uitbarsting die volgt. In ‘Street Lights Fail’, het nummer genoemd naar het vorige album, is de sfeervolle zang soms dramatisch, maar niet pathetisch. Hier is het een prachtige vioolpassage die de aandacht trekt tussen de vrij ingetogen muziek. Schreven we vorige keer nog dat ‘Neon Light Eternal’ het einde zal betekenen, dan werd nu onthuld dat Nucleus Torn voor minstens een decennium de ijskast in gaat. Dit is een grandioos slotakkoord van een uitzonderlijk project. Maar het echte slotakkoord bestaat uit het artbook ‘Blowing Up The Entire World (Explosions 1997-2015)’.
