3HM: Three Headed Monster

3 Headed Monster is an American metal band who chose to play instrumental music. No vocals indeed. They go for a heavy approach and swallow the bait. In the eight tracks one can hear thrash, death, power metal and some progressive influences. They came into being in 2001 – initially under the moniker Baptismal By Fire – when four childhood friends founded a band in Massachusetts.
Both guitarists, both named Chris, are masters in shredding, but in many songs we also hear any sensitive, emotive guitar passages and these are the cream of the crop. From time to time they have mixed some spoken samplers in between. ‘The Beast Of Odo Island’ and ‘Bitter End’ are the oldest songs and I have the impression they used to be a bit more melodic then. Or maybe they just improved their fastness through the years of course. My favourite songs are the thrashy ‘Perfect-Plex’, ‘Ultimate Rage’ (magnificent descending guitar runs), ‘The Beast Of Odo Island’ (with acoustic intro) and ‘Bitter End’ with clean guitar soloing in the vein of Metallica (think of ‘Orion’). This song is a bit slower than their maximum velocity shredding, which is fine. I prefer a CD with vocals, but this is beautiful music as well, though my attention easily wanes with instrumental albums. But these are very skilled musicians. Unfortunately I just read that Chris Cecchini left the band. They are looking for a new force.

3 Headed Monster is een Amerikaanse metal band die ervoor gekozen hebben om instrumentale muziek te maken. Geen zang dus. Ze gaan er stevig tegenaan, in de acht nummers horen we zowel thrash, death, power metal en enige progressieve invloeden. Ze ontstonden in 2001 – eerst onder de naam Baptismal By Fire – toen vier vrienden de band oprichtten in Massachusetts.
Beide gitaristen, die allebei Chris heten, zijn meesters in shredding, maar in vele nummers passeren ook gevoelige gitaarpassages en die vormen nu net het neusje van de zalm. Hier en daar heeft men er wat gesproken samplers tussen gemixt. ‘The Beast Of Odo Island’ and ‘Bitter End’ zijn de oudste nummers en ik heb de indruk dat ze toen wat melodieuzer waren, maar het kan natuurlijk ook zijn dat ze in de loop der jaren gewoon sneller hebben leren spelen. Mijn favoriete nummers zijn het thrashy ‘Perfect-Plex’, ‘Ultimate Rage’ (prachtige afdalende toonladders), ‘The Beast Of Odo Island’ (met akoestisch intro) en ‘Bitter End’ met heldere gitaarklanken à la Metallica (denk aan ‘Orion’). Dit nummer is iets trager dan het snelle shredding wat natuurlijk ook niet mis is. Ik hoor liever een cd met zang, maar dit was toch ook knappe muziek, al drijft je aandacht tijdens instrumentale albums toch altijd wat vlugger af. Maar spelen kunnen ze wel erg goed. Helaas lees ik zopas dat Chris Cecchini de band verlaten heeft, men is op zoek naar een nieuwe kracht.
