ELDRITCH: Underlying Issues

The Italian veterans of technical/progressive metal come back with their tenth album. The first thing I noticed is the ill chosen cover artwork: very nice and original, but more appropriate for a ‘real’ prog band and not these guys who can be quite heavy or even thrashy at times.
They open with a power full chunk containing both a heavy experimental (keyboard sounds) break and flashing virtuoso guitar solo. ‘Danger Zone’ follows the same pattern, but is catchier. Even if ‘Broken’ is less an ear-catcher, the musicianship is still tight and flashy, the complexity increases and the power lessens in darker moods. Ditto for the next one, which is more sober. Terence Holler is a good singer, no more no less, which can’t conceal English isn’t his native tongue and sometimes we get to hear, as in the pretty temperate ‘The Face’, his Hetfield accent. Indeed, now and then he reminds of Metallica’s front man voice. ‘To The Moon’ is a beautiful power ballad with guitar soloing galore. In the intro of ‘Bringer Of Hate’ there’s some keyboard. By the way, that instrument is barely used on this album and mainly to lay some electronic accents. In ‘The Light’ Eldritch’ sound goes thrash, but the song also contains a catchy hook and a thoughtful guitar solo. And so it goes on until … they close with a surprisingly reckless chunk of technical thrash metal.

De Italiaanse veteranen van technische/progressieve metal komen terug met een tiende album. Het eerste wat me opviel is het slecht gekozen hoesontwerp: erg mooi en origineel, maar eerder gepast voor een ‘echte’ prog band en niet deze kerels die best heavy zijn of zelfs thrashy bij momenten.
Geopend wordt met een knaller die een heavy experimentele break (keyboard geluiden) bevat en flitsend virtuoze gitaarsolo. ‘Danger Zone’ volgt hetzelfde stramien, maar is catchier. Al is ‘Broken’ wat minder in het oor springend, er wordt nog steeds strak en flitsend gespeeld, de complexiteit stijgt en de power mindert in een donkerder sfeertje. Idem voor het volgende dat wat minder intens is. Terence Holler is een goeie zanger zonder meer, waar we nu en dan horen dat Engels niet zijn moedertaal is en soms krijgen we, zoals in het vrij bezadigde ‘The Face’, zijn Hetfield accent. Inderdaad, nu en dan doet hij denken aan de stem van Metallica’s frontman. ‘To The Moon’ is een mooie powerballad, waarin royaal gesoleerd wordt. In de intro van ‘Bringers Of Hate’ zit wat keyboard. Laat me terloops melden dat die op dit album amper gebruikt wordt en hoofdzakelijk om elektronische geluidjes toe te voegen. In ‘The Light’ gaat Eldritch’s geluid richting thrash, maar het nummer bevat ook een catchy hook en een bedachtzame gitaarsolo. Afijn, zo gaat het lekker verder tot… de afsluiter een verassend heftige brok technische thrash blijkt te zijn.
Aanrader voor liefhebbers van technisch georiënteerde prog metal.
