CALIGULA's HORSE: Bloom

The upcoming success of Caligula’s Horse – named after the infamous horse of Rome’s despot – was mainly situated in their homeland Australia until now. At that place the band was formed in 2011 by singer Jim Grey and guitarist Sam Vallen and few months later they came up with their debut album ‘Moments From Ephemeral City’. Two years later that record got a successor. ‘The Tide, The Thief & River’s End’ was followed by a great number of successful gigs and tours. Now they inked several deals, amongst them a record contract with InsideOut label, to force an international breakthrough with their third album ‘Bloom’.
‘Bloom’ happens to be Caligula’s Horse’s most vivid and emotional record, with a perfect balance between power and reflection. That power and reflection is indeed nicely juxtaposed on the entire album. If opener ‘Bloom’ still starts introvert with acoustic guitars and velvet chants, followed by a very beautiful emotive guitar solo, then it passes – just like the title suggests – into a robust song with technical guitar runs. One moment vocals of Jim Grey are ultra sweet, a bit later he sounds angry and resolute. His voice timbre is sensitive and smooth and reminds us a bit of Jasper Steverlinck of Arid and Daniel Gildenlow of Pain Of Salvation. He often glides into higher regions and sounds then quite emo. ‘Firelight’ has been selected to shoot a video clip and has a catchy flow with – once again – excellent guitar soloing. The more than nine minutes long ‘Dragonfly’ is the highlight of the record and includes innovative twists and turns, while heaviness and soft emotions go hand in hand again. Although the band sounds rather sophisticated, they do insert proper heavy parts; that’s why ‘Bloom’ brims with dynamics. I guess that breakthrough will happen.

Het opkomende succes van Caligula’s Horse – genoemd naar het prijsbeest van de Romeinse despoot – speelde zich tot nog toe vooral af in thuisland Australië. Daar werd de band in 2011 opgericht door zanger Jim Grey en gitarist Sam Vallen en bracht enkele maanden later al het debuut ‘Moments From Ephemeral City’ uit. Twee jaar later kreeg dit plaatje een opvolger. ‘The Tide, The Thief & River’s End’ had een reeks succesvolle concerten en tours tot gevolg. Nu zijn er verschillende deals gesloten, waaronder een platencontract met InsideOut, om met het derde album ‘Bloom’ een internationale doorbraak te forceren.
‘Bloom’ zou Caligula’s Horse meest levendige en emotionele kant tonen, met een mooi evenwicht tussen kracht en reflectie. Die kracht en reflectie worden inderdaad puik tegenover elkaar uitgespeeld. Begint opener ‘Bloom’ nog introvert met akoestische gitaren en omfloerste stem, gevolgd door zeer mooie huilende gitaarsolo’s, dan bloeit het – net zoals de titel aangeeft – open tot een robuuste song met technische gitaarloopjes. Het ene moment is de zang in ‘Marigold’ poeslief, een moment daarna kwaad en kordaat. Het stemgeluid van Jim Grey is fijnbesnaard en doet wat denken aan Hasper Steverlinck van Arid en Daniel Gildenlow van Pain Of Salvation. Hij zoekt meermaals de hogere regionen op en klinkt dan behoorlijk emo. ‘Firelight’ is uitverkoren voor de videoclip en verloopt vlot met uitstekend gitaarwerk. Het meer dan negen minuten lange ‘Dragonfly’ is het hoogtepunt van de plaat en kent innovatieve wendingen, waardoor heftigheid en zoete emoties weer fijn hand in hand gaan. Ook al klinkt de band vrij gesofistikeerd, men let erop om af en toe flink heftig uit de hoek te komen zodat ‘Bloom’ straalt van dynamiek. Het zit wel snor met die doorbraak.
