SOLUTION .45: Nightmares In The Waking State - Part 1

After ‘For Aeons Past’ (2010) is this the second album for this band, who makes it the first of a twofold album. Since the recordings for that second part are already done, we won’t have to wait too long for its release.
Tight and staccato the drums rush into ‘Wanderer’, raw Swedish grunt rallies them together with melodic guitar lines building up to a virtuoso guitar solo, after which voice/drums take over again, while a bit further keyboards enhance the hectic effect. I couldn’t find out who he is, but probably Mikko Haarkin (ex-Sonata Arctica) who helped them also on their debut. Whoever it might be, he can be heard in almost all songs. ‘Void’ broiders along the same pattern, but Christian uses also his clean voice now (think Vintersorg/Swanö) in the rapid groove of this technical song. The alternating use of grunt and clean isn’t new, certainly not for Christian who used this style figure in Scar Symmetry before. ‘Heavens’ stays technical, but less heavy with recurrent catchy clean vocal lines. A bit further, mainly in the first part of ‘Despair’, they buckle down, because here they need prominently acoustic/keyboard with clean voice and a fragile melody. Then again ‘Second To None’ is raw, technical and fast, melodic. And so on till the long closing song, which mood is pretty different from the rest. Dreary, at first only with keyboards, then the drums slowly set in, before they pick up the pace a bit along grunt, also the old-school American type, and clean with sombre riffs.
Technical and heavy, melodic and sensitive: prime techno prog death!

Na ‘For Aeons Past’ (2010) is dit het tweede album voor deze band die er meteen een eerste deel van een tweeluik van maakt. Vermits de opnames voor het tweede deel al ingeblikt zijn, zal dit allicht minder lang op zich laten wachten.
Strak en staccato razen drums ‘Wanderer’ in, rauwe Zweedse grunt vervoegt ze samen met melodieuze gitaarlijnen die uitmonden in een virtuoze gitaarsolo, waarna stem/drum weer de overhand halen en wat verder keyboards het hectische effect versterken. Wie de keyboard speler is kon ik niet achterhalen, maar wellicht is het Mikko Haarkin (ex-Sonata Arctica), die hen ook al op hun debuut hielp. Wie het ook is, hij is in quasi alle songs te horen. ‘Void’ borduurt verder op dat patroon, maar Christian begint nu ook zijn cleane stem te gebruiken (denk Vintersorg/Swanö) in de voortsnellende groove van dit technische nummer. De wisselwerking clean/grunt is niet nieuw, zeker niet voor Christian, die deze stijlfiguur ook in Scar Symmetry gebruikte. ‘Heavens’ blijft technisch, maar iets minder heavy met catchy cleane zanglijnen die terugkeren. Wat verder, vooral in het eerste deel van ‘Despair’ wordt de riem even afgelegd, want hier is voornamelijk akoestisch/keyboard met cleane stem en een fragiele melodie nodig. ‘Second To None’ is dan weer directer: rauw, technisch en snel, melodieus. Zo gaat het verder tot de lange afsluiter, met een andere sfeer dan de rest van het album. Dreigend, eerst enkel met keyboard, waarna drums accenten leggen, vooraleer het wat sneller verdergaat langs grunt, ook de eerder old school Amerikaanse soort, en clean met trage sombere riffs.
Technisch en heavy, melodieus en gevoelig: top techno prog death!
