IMPERIA: Tears Of Silence

Imperia. We have missed them for a while: more precisely since previous album ’Secret Passion’ in April 2011. The international band of the flamboyant Norwegian (opera)singer Helena Iren Michaelson (once sexy front lady of Trail Of Tears and also Angel) has written new songs in 2014 and early 2015 they entered the Spacelab Studios in Germany with Everon’s Christian Moos as mixing engineer. Oliver Phillips, of Everon fame as well, took care of the orchestration and guitarist Jan Yrlund stands for the artwork as usual.
‘Tears Of Silence’ is a bit more straight forward than its predecessor, but one can find lots of detailed ornaments to increase the joy of listening. We already knew for a long time that Helena happens to be an amazing singer, not only focusing on her operatic abilities, but putting her dynamic voice in function of any particular song. We hear mostly standard gothic metal with any symphonic arrangements, but also folkloristic influences are part of this album. After the typical gothic opener ‘Silence Is My Friend’ we hear this right away in the oriental tinged ‘Crossroads’ where percussion and authentic instruments are used. Choirs and violins add a surplus value to ‘Away’ while flutes relish the folk-like ‘Friheten Vil Seire’. One can even detect grunts occasionally (in ‘My Screaming Heart’ and ‘The Vikingsong’ with sturdy male chants). An important feature of every Imperia album is the emotional baggage and that’s alright again this time. Helena sounds juicy and sensual in the powerful ‘Motherlove’, fragile in the sweet ballad ‘Innocent Child’ and really catchy in ‘Wings Of Hope’ where she suddenly switches to operatic exposure, while guitar solos and violins are the icing on the cake. Even a Russian choir contributed to the album. All this results in a diverse and diverting album.

Imperia. We hebben ze weer een tijd moeten missen: meer precies sinds vorig album ’Secret Passion’ in april 2011. De internationale band van de flamboyante Noorse (opera)zangeres Helena Iren Michaelson (ooit sexy boegbeeld van Trail Of Tears, later ook Angel) heeft in 2014 nieuwe songs geschreven en dook begin 2015 de Spacelab studio in Duitsland in met Everon’s Christian Moos als mixer. Oliver Phillips, eveneens Everon, zorgde voor de orkestratie en gitarist Jan Yrlund als vanouds voor het artwork.
‘Tears Of Silence’ is wat meer rechttoe rechtaan dan zijn voorganger, maar we merken toch nog heel wat fraaie gedetailleerde ornamenten die het luisterplezier de hoogte injagen. We wisten al lang dat Helena een fantastische zangeres is, die niet alleen uitpakt met haar operavocalen, maar haar dynamische stem in functie van elk liedje aanwendt. Het is overwegend standaard gothic metal met enige symfonische arrangementen, maar ook folkloristische invloeden maken deel uit van dit album. Na het typisch gotische ‘Silence Is My Friend’ horen we dat al meteen in het oosters getinte ‘Crossroads’ waar percussie en authentieke instrumenten aangewend worden. Koren en viool geven een bijkomende waarde aan ‘Away’, terwijl fluitjes het folky ‘Friheten Vil Seire’ opsmukken. Zelfs grunts komen al eens voorbij (‘My Screaming Heart’ en ‘The Vikingsong’ waar kloeke mannenzang ook prominent is). Een belangrijke factor van elk Imperia album is de emotionele bagage en daar zit het deze keer ook weer snor. Helena klinkt smeuïg en uitdagend in het krachtige ‘Motherlove’, fragiel in de breekbare ballade ‘Innocent Child’ en bijzonder catchy in ‘Wings Of Hope’ waar ze ineens op operazang overschakelt en viool en een gitaarsolo de kers op de taart vormen. Zelfs een Russisch koor doet zijn intrede en dit alles resulteert in een variabel en onderhoudend album.
