THE BOYSCOUT: My Route 66

The Boyscout is a nickname for Manuel Mijalkovski and also the name of his one man rock project. The man has a network of well known singers and musicians which gives him the opportunity to realize a good sounding and well constructed album. The album is a tribute to the famous Route 66 in the United States and a set of classic songs that can easily be associated with being on the road. The special digipack double CD edition has also a bonus CD with ‘Blood Red Roses – A Rock Fantasy’, which is an album with a bunch of songs that are mostly written by Michael Voss. The guests on the Route 66 tribute album are Paul Shortino, Jeff Scott Soto, Claus Lessmann, Tony Carey, Michael Voss, Oliver Hartmann and Linda Lulka. Those of you that are familiar with melodic rock will be very happy about this list!
The Boyscout himself can also be heard as a singer and guitar player and on the bonus album there are also guest appearances by Robin Beck and Amanda Sommerville. So after all this namedropping, what’s the music like? The covers are well performed of course with some real killer voices. The ‘Blood Red Rose’ album is a nice melodic rock album that lends more to pop than hard rock. Everything is well performed of course and the production is radio friendly. A nice album to cruise the road with.

The Boyscout is de artiestennaam van Manuel Mijalkovski en meteen ook de naam van zijn solo project. The Boyscout beschikt over een indrukwekkend netwerk van rockmuzikanten die aan zijn project extra glans geven. Het eerbetoon aan de fameuze Route 66 in de Verenigde Staten staat vol nummers (covers) die lekker klinken als je onderweg bent. Daarvoor heeft hij beroep kunnen doen op een aantal indrukwekkende namen: Paul Shortino, Jeff Scott Soto, Claus Lessmann, Tony Carey, Michael Voss, Oliver Hartmann en Linda Lulka. Wie thuis is in het wereldje van de melodieuze rock zal hier beslist van onder de indruk zijn.
The Boyscout zelf is actief als zanger en gitarist. Op de bonus cd ‘Blood Red Rose – A Rock Fantasy’ staan voornamelijk nummers van Michael Voss en zijn er gastrollen weggelegd voor Robin Beck en Amanda Sommerville. De muziek gaat er lekker in. De covers zijn uiteraard heel goed gekozen en de gasten tillen het niveau op. De productie is bijzonder radiovriendelijk en het bonus album ‘Blood Red Rose’ klinkt vlot en aangenaam met een sound die meer pop dan hard rock is. Dat neemt niet weg dat er af en toe stevig gerockt wordt. Een mooi album om op te zetten in de auto, dat is het zeker.
