PRIMAL FEAR: New Religion

Those who follow the German heavy metal scene, will be quite familiar with Primal Fear. The band was founded in 1997 by vocalist Ralf Scheepers after his short time period as singer of Gamma Ray. A second important founding member and kind of Jack-of-all-trades (think about Sinner) is bassist and producer Mat Sinner. Primal Fear released six albums and one dvd through the years, music best labelled as heavy metal with a Judas Priest touch (high pitched vocals of Ralf) and a Teutonic Helloween character on the score of their catchy song material.
In 2005 I heard ‘Seven Seals’ and I have to admit that this predecessor was more impressive. Primal Fear adopted more dark atmospheres then and it pleased me. On ‘New Religion’ they go for a quite commercial approach from time to time. I cannot describe a duet with Simone Simons in another way, surely when it is veined with modern beats. I do prefer straight heavy metal tracks with high but powerful vocals such as opening track ‘Sign Of Fear’ or ‘Face The Emptiness’.
Halfway the album we have an extensive track divided in three parts, it is a first highlight. The first part is rather calm, featured by piano, but the second part which is instrumental really kicks ass. Other favourite songs are ‘The Curse Of Sharon’ and ‘World On Fire’, the latter one includes a beautiful guitar solo. Most guitars on this album are played by Stefan Leibing, but Magnus Karlsson added two solos and guitarist Henny Wolter has returned to the band as well. On drums one can find the Canadian Randy Black. But there are more changes. Primal Fear finished their long term cooperation with Nuclear Blast and ‘New Religion’ is their first album on Frontiers. The hard-working band supported this release with an extended European tour with U.D.O. The album occludes in a quiescent way with the ballad ‘The Man (that I don’t know)’. The limited edition digipack version includes the videoclips of ‘Sign Of Fear’ and ‘Fighting Yhe Darkness’. It is surely not a bad album, but I have heard better ones of Primal Fear.

Wie de Duitse heavy metal scene een beetje volgt, hoeven we Primal Fear vast niet voor te stellen. De band werd opgericht in 1997 door zanger Ralf Scheepers nadat ie er een korte periode als vocalist bij Gamma Ray had opzitten. Een tweede belangrijke oprichter die op alle fronten thuis is (denk aan de band Sinner) is bassist en producer Mat Sinner. In de loop der jaren bracht Primal Fear al zes albums en een dvd uit die we best kunnen omschrijven als heavy metal met een Judas Priest inslag (hoge vocalen van Ralf) en een Teutoons Helloween karakter dat borg staat voor toegankelijke nummers.
In 2005 hoorde ik ‘Seven Seals’ en ik moet eerlijk toegeven dat dit vorig album toch meer impact op me had. Primal Fear koos toen voor een beetje donkerder muziek en dat is me toen goed bevallen. Op ‘New Religion’ gaat men al eens de commerciële toer op. Anders kan ik een duet met Simone Simons (Epica) niet noemen, om nog maar te zwijgen van de moderne beats die voorkomen in dit nummer. Dan liever stevige metal met hoge maar krachtige zang zoals opener ‘Sign Of Fear’ of ‘Face The Emptiness’.

De meeste gitaren zijn ingespeeld door Stefan Leibing, maar Magnus Karlsson speelde ook nog twee solo’s in en voortaan is gitarist Henny Wolter ook teruggekeerd naar de band. Op drums vinden we de Canadees Randy Black. En er zijn nog meer veranderingen. Primal Fear beëindigde de jarenlange samenwerking met Nuclear Blast en ‘New Religion’ is het eerste album op Frontiers. De hardwerkende band verzilverde deze release met een uitgebreide Europese tournee met U.D.O. Het album eindigt op een rustige manier met de ballade ‘The Man (that I don’t know)’. De gelimiteerde digipack versie bevat de videoclips van ‘Sign Of Fear’ en ‘Fighting The Darkness’. Geen slecht album, maar ik heb er toch al betere gehoord van Primal Fear.
