VANDEN PLAS: Chronicles Of The Immortals - Netherworld II

This is the follow-up for the ‘Chronicles Of The Immortals – Netherworld’. In this second and last part of the concept album, we continue our discovery of Vanden Plas’ interpretation of 13 volumes counting vampire cycle written by Wolfgang Hohlbein. This is only a manner of speech, since I don’t know the first part… So, let’s dive at once into the second.
The opener starts slow and quietly, but ‘In My Universe’ grows into a fine chunk of heavy bombastic prog, which grows on you after each listening, in which Andy’s great and versatile voice is complemented by choir. ‘Godmaker’ is more complex and contains some virtuoso guitar as well as some vocal hooks. After an introspective intro, Vanden Plas goes resolutely heavy on ‘Stone Roses’ (check the video out on their website) in a sturdy, hectic frame with clashing chords and fine riffing… Well, in fact all instruments/musicians are going strong. The 13’ long ‘Blood Of Eden’ begins slowly and we also get a female guest singer, while Andy sings passages in French as well as in German and Italian, but after five minutes or so they unleash themselves to make the song sturdier, more complex, adventurous, diverse. In the rather calm, keyboard driven, ‘Monster’ we have a few passages where Andy’s voice overlaps with a near grunt backing. ‘Children’ – calm, symphonic with heavy thundering chorus – is the shortest song, but again full of variety. Personally, I find ‘Last Fight’ - nervous, heavy, again with some bombastic choir, detailed arrangements - the most impressive work of the Germans on this album. ‘Circle Of The Devil’, with overlapping keyboards and piano in the first part, takes us, mainly musing, past an angelic choir towards the majestic finale, where Andy, choir and female voice melt together with the orchestral prog.

Hier is de opvolger van ‘Chronicles Of The Immortals – Netherworld’. In het tweede deel van dit conceptalbum, zetten we onze ontdekkingsreis verder in Vanden Plas’ interpretatie van Wolfgang Hohlbein’s 13-delige vampier-cyclus. Dit enkel bij wijze van spreken, want ik ken dat eerste deel helemaal niet… Laten we dus direct in het tweede duiken.
Er wordt traag en rustig geopend, maar ‘In My Universe’ groeit uit tot een prachtige brok heavy bombastische prog die, luisterbeurt na luisterbeurt, blijft groeien en waarin Andy’s krachtige en veelzijdige stem aangevuld wordt door koor. ‘Godmaker’ is complexer, met virtuoze gitaar en enkele vocale hooks. Na een introspectieve intro, trekt Vanden Plas op ‘Stone Roses’ (ga eens kijken op hun website voor de video) resoluut de heavy kaart in een heftig, hectisch kader met botsende akkoorden en fijne riffs... Nou ja, eigenlijk zijn alle instrumenten/muzikanten sterk bezig. Daarna begint het 13’ durende ‘Blood Of Eden’ rustig en krijgen we ook een gast zangeres te horen, terwijl Andy ook passages in Frans, Duits en Italiaans zingt, maar na vijf minuten worden de remmen losgegooid om steviger, complexer, avontuurlijker, meer divers uit de hoek te komen. In het globaal eerder kalme, door keyboard gedragen, ‘Monster’ zitten een paar passages waar Andy’s stem overlapt met een bijna grunt backing. ‘Children’ – kalm, symfonisch met heavy knallend refrein - is het kortste nummer, maar weer vol variatie. Persoonlijk vind ik ‘Last Fight’ - stuwend, nerveus, heavy, met weer wat bombastisch koor, gedetailleerde arrangementen - het meest indrukwekkend opus van de Duitsers op deze schijf. ‘Circle Of The Devil’ met overlappende keyboard en piano in het eerste deel, neemt ons, grotendeels mijmerend, via engelenkoor mee naar een grootse finale, waarin Andy, koor en vrouwenstem versmelten met orkestrale prog.
Verbluffend sterk album van erg getalenteerde muzikanten.
