This is the fourth album of Rolf Munke’s project EMPIRE and it’s another cracker! If you like brooding, classic and melodic heavy rock, read on. This is definitely for you.
Munke is German guitarist who has always chosen the best musicians for his music. That often means big names and Munke has never been short of these. As on the three previous records, Neil Murray (ex-WHITESNAKE, BLACK SABBATH) is responsible for the melodic bass lines. Tony Martin, vocalist on the two previous cd’s, chose not to be a part of EMPIRE any more, but Doogie White (MALMSTEEN, CORNERSTONE, ex-RAINBOW) is without any doubt a perfect replacement. The drums are handled by none other than Mike Terrana (AXEL RUDI PELL, MASTERPLAN, ex-MALMSTEEN).
Like its predecessors, “Chasing Shadows†is quite like 80’s SABBATH, so if you like the DIO- or Martin-era of that band, you’ll appreciate this. RAINBOW’s “Stranger In Us All†album also comes to mind quite often, and not just because of White’s vocals.
No surprises if you’ve followed the band, but plenty of great hard rock songs: the title track, ‘The Altar’, ‘Child Of The Light’, ‘The Rulers Of the World’... Yep, these are the kind of tracks that Munke is known for.
Perhaps a bit too predictable and lacking that one epic masterpiece, but it’s a kind of music I feel very comfortable with. I can still highly recommend it.

Dit is het vierde album van Rolf Munkes project EMPIRE, en het is weer een goeie! Als je houdt van slepende, klassieke en melodieuze heavy rock, lees dan verder. Dit is zeker iets voor jou.
Munke is een Duitse gitarist die altijd de beste muzikanten heeft uitgezocht voor zijn muziek. Dat betekent vaak grote namen, en daar heeft Munke nooit een gebrek aan gehad. Net als op de vorige drie platen is Neil Murray (ex-WHITESNAKE, BLACK SABBATH) verantwoordelijk voor de melodieuze baslijnen. Tony Martin, vocalist op de twee vorige cd’s, verkoos om niet langer deel uit te maken van EMPIRE, maar Dogie White (MALMSTEEN, CORNERSTONE, ex-RAINBOW) is zonder twijfel de perfecte vervanger. De drums worden bespeeld door niemand minder dan Mike Terrana (AXEL RUDI PELL, MASTERPLAN, ex-MALMSTEEN).
Net als de voorgangers klinkt “Chasing Shadows†erg als BLACK SABBATH in de jaren ’80, dus als je van de Dio- of Martin-periodes van die groep houdt, zal je dit ook wel weten te appreciëren. Ook RAINBOWs “Stranger In Us All†komt bij me op, en niet enkel door de vocalen van White.
Geen verrassingen als je de band gevolgd hebt, maar wel een reeks sterke hardrock nummers: de titeltrack, ‘The Altar’, ‘Child Of The Light’, ‘The Rulers Of the World’… dit is het soort nummers waarvoor Munke bekend staat.
Misschien iets te voorspelbaar en er ontbreekt die ene epische klassieker, maar het blijft het soort muziek waar ik me comfortabel bij voel. Ik kan dit album dus van harte aanbevelen.
