BLYND: Liber Sum

Pitch Black Records always has a finger on the pulse of Cypriote bands and it is fine to be kept informed about the small, yet lively metal scène on the island this way. The band Blynd happens to be ready with its third album, after the debut ‘The Enemy’ in 2010 and ‘Punishment Unfolds’ in 2012.
The four piece plays vigorous thrash/death metal, but gives their compositions a feeling of grandness by symphonic arrangements. With opener ‘Bread And Circuses’ we are initially put on the wrong leg with female operatic chants, symphony and massive choirs, until the thrash phenomenon soon explodes. This band knows the ropes. The roaring grunts of bassist Andreas bring in the death metal element (thus no squealing thrash vocals) and the instrumental frame appears to be abundantly technical skilled.
Even thematically Blynd is an exception. No massacres for fun, but they dive into the Cypriot history and even if that comes down on the same violence, it adds body to the whole thing. ‘Liber Sum’ is a cry for freedom and traditions, combined with alchemistic art of psycho-spiritual growth and transmutation. Even without all this information, the tight-as-hell ‘Phobos’ and the almost pompous ‘Barbarians’ turn into direct hits in the genre. In ‘Under High Skies’ they take a short acoustic pause, to continue with the hard-hitting title track. Tight and proud they round off with a positive note in ‘The Kingdom Within’ in which one can hear the speech of ‘The Great Dictator’ (Charlie Chaplin). A recommended album, headbanging irresistible.

Pitch Black Records houdt altijd de vinger aan de pols van Cypriotische bands en het is goed dat we op deze manier ook op de hoogte blijven van de kleine, maar blijkbaar levendige metalscène op het eiland. De band Blynd is zo al toe aan een derde album, na debuut ‘The Enemy’ in 2010 en ‘Punishment Unfolds’ in 2012.
De vierkoppige band speelt energieke thrash/death metal, maar geeft zijn composities een gevoel van grandeur door symfonische arrangementen. Zo wordt je met opener ‘Bread And Circuses’ even op het verkeerde been gezet met vrouwelijke operazang, symfonie en krachtdadige koren tot weldra het thrash fenomeen losbarst. Deze band weet van wanten. De brullende grunt van bassist Andreas brengt het death element in (geen geknepen thrash stem dus) en de instrumentale omlijsting is uitbundig technisch.
Ook qua thema’s is Blynd een uitzondering. Zonder koppen te laten rollen voor de gein, duikt men de Cypriotische geschiedenis in en al komt het op hetzelfde neer, er zit wat meer body achter. ‘Liber Sum’ is een schreeuw voor vrijheid en eigenheid, gecombineerd met alchemistische kunst van psychespirituele groei en transmutatie. Ook zonder deze informatie blijken het strakke ‘Phobos’ en het bijna pompeuze ‘Barbarians’ voltreffers in het genre. Tijdens ‘Under High Skies’ neemt men een korte akoestische pauze, om er in het titelnummer weer stevig hakkend tegenaan te gaan. Strak en trots eindigt men met een positieve noot in ‘The Kingdom Within’ waarin de speech van ‘The Great Dictator’ van Charlie Chaplin opduikt. Een aanrader waarbij headbangen onvermijdelijk is.
