ROXXCALIBUR: Gems Of The NWOBHM

The first thing I’ve noticed was the cover art, which seemed pretty familiar. These Germans used one of Rodney Matthews (a.o. Praying Mantis, Diamond Head, Magnum, …) magnificent paintings. For each of their three albums, in fact. If you think the cover already brings us back to the heydays of the NWOBHM (New Wave Of British HEAVY Metal), then look at the track list. For the third time already, Roxxcalibur make a fine selection of rare tracks of bands long forgotten, except by a few rabid fans. The members of this tribute band have gathered experience a.o. in the ranks of Manilla Road and Masters of Disguise (tribute to Savage Grace), so the performance of these songs sounds great.
Let’s see what the music holds in store! My judgment is mainly based on the songs I already knew. ‘Stormchild’ is well done, as well as Budgie’s cover (although I would have preferred they had chosen ‘Gunslinger’), at the end of ‘Midnight Chaser’ they made a long outro without harming the original in the least and Fist’s cover sounds a lot heavier than the version I know. The other songs are gems, each one of them, but personally I liked the cover of Marquis de Sade and Roxx’ version of ‘Soldiers Of War’ the best. Partly this is undoubtedly due to the 21th century production. After all, time didn’t stand still… these songs are over thirty years old!
For NWOBHM aficionados, this is a real treat!

Het eerste wat me opviel was de hoes, die me bekend voorkwam. Deze Duitsers gebruikten één van Rodney Matthews (o.a. Praying Mantis, Diamond Head, Magnum, … ) schitterende werken. Voor elk van hun drie albums, om precies te zijn. Als je vindt dat de cover je al terugwerpt in de hoogdagen van de NWOBHM ( New Wave Of British heavy Metal), bekijk dan de nummers eens. Voor de derde keer al, maakt Roxxcalibur een prachtige selectie van zeldzame nummers van bands die reeds lang vergeten zijn, behalve door de échte liefhebbers. De leden van deze tribute band hebben ervaring opgedaan bij o.a. Manilla Road en Masters of Disguise (tribuut voor Savage Grace), zodat de uitvoering van de nummers fantastisch klinkt.
Over naar de muziek! Ik baseer me daarbij vooral op de nummers die ik al kende. ‘Stormchild’ is mooi gedaan, de cover van Budgie eveneens (al had ik liever gehad dat ze ‘Gunslinger’ kozen), aan ‘Midnight Chaser’ hebben ze een lange outtro gehaakt zonder aan het origineel afbreuk te doen en de cover van Fist klinkt veel steviger dan de oorspronkelijke versie. De overige nummers zijn stuk voor stuk goed en persoonlijk vond ik de cover van Marquis de Sade en Roxx’ versie van ‘Soldiers of War’ het best. Deels zal dit wel te maken hebben met de 21ste eeuwse productie. De tijd heeft tenslotte niet stilgestaan… die nummers zijn meer dan dertig jaar oud!
Voor NWOBHM liefhebbers is dit een ware traktatie!
