INSOMNIUS DEI: Illusions Of Silence

InSomnius Dei is an ambient doom/death project that once started as a reservoir for all kinds of ideas of Mark Kelson, better known as vocalist/guitarist and composer of the Australian band The Eternal. That band once emanated from the ashes of Cryptal Darkness. One might say that The Eternal evolved towards more accessibility through the years and they introduced any gothic and progressive elements in their music on the way. But the heavy doom stuff is reserved for InSomnius Dei.
In early 2006 Mark decided that involving other musicians would add an extra dimension to what otherwise would end up as a kind of solo album. He found a congenial soul in Terry Vainoras and indeed, he did not need to look far because that is The Eternal’s bass player. Even more, both once collaborated in Cryptal Darkness. Terry is known in Australia for his work with Damaged, Earth and Canonero.
‘Illusions Of Silence’ is a musical adventure that guides us through many different moods. Six songs, each of them around ten minutes long – only bridged by a musical interlude of two minutes – invite you to lock yourself off the outside world, in preference with headphones and let yourself go in a compelling rush of desperate grunts, contemplative clean vocals and most of all an opulence of melodic guitar leads with a Pink Floyd-ish tinge. One moment peace comes over you during beautiful, dreamy passages; a bit later ‘Illusions Of Silence’ submerges you in an incredible aggression and heaviness. It is a sonic journey of epic proportions and it overwhelms you with its intensity. The good thing is that you start to recognize some patterns after a few spins and at the edge of “being conversant with†and “discovering†lies the true reward. Many people would not have expected such a primordial power of Mark Kelson anymore. Mark you, I do equally love The Eternal as well; but this is really different and a nice challenge for doom adepts who prefer to have something to fathom when they buy an album. In addition this is Mark’s debut as engineer/producer at his No. 13 Studio in Melbourne. ‘Illusions Of Silence’ was mastered by Endel Rivers who gives the albums of The Eternal a finishing touch as well.

InSomnius Dei is een ambient doom/death project dat ooit begon als een vergaarbak voor allerlei ideeën van Mark Kelson, beter bekend als zanger/gitarist en componist van de Australische band The Eternal. Die band is dan weer ontstaan uit de resten van Cryptal Darkness. We kunnen stellen dat The Eternal naar een grotere toegankelijkheid geëvolueerd is in de loop der jaren en bijvoorbeeld ook enige gotische en progressieve elementen in de muziek introduceerde, maar het zware, erg doomy materiaal is voorbehouden aan InSomnius Dei.
In het voorjaar van 2006 besliste Mark dat de bijdrage van andere muzikanten een extra dimensie zou toevoegen aan wat anders veel leek op een soloalbum. Hij vond een geestesgenoot in Terry Vainoras en hoefde dus niet eens ver te zoeken want dat is ook de bassist van The Eternal. Sterker nog, de twee werkten al een blauwe maandag samen in Cryptal Darkness. Terry is in Australië ook bekend vanwege zijn werk met Damaged, Earth en Canonero.
‘Illusions Of Silence’ is een muzikaal avontuur dat ons doorheen heel wat verschillende stemmingen loodst. Zes nummers, ieder zo’n tien minuten lang – en slechts een muzikaal interludium van twee minuten als brug – nodigen uit tot je afsluiten van de buitenwereld, bijvoorkeur met hoofdtelefoon en opgaan in een meeslepende roes van wanhopige grunts, beschouwende cleane vocalen, en vooral heel veel melodieus gitaarwerk dat soms erg Pink Floydiaans aandoet. Het ene moment daalt vrede over je neer tijdens mooie, dromerige passages, even later dompelt ‘Illusions Of Silence’ je onder in een ongelofelijke agressie en zwaarmoedigheid. Het is een geluidsreis die soms epische vormen aanneemt en overweldigt door zijn intensiteit. Het mooie is dat je na enkele luisterbeurten bepaalde patronen gaat herkennen en op de grens van “vertrouwd met†en “ontdekken†ligt het ware plezier. Velen zullen niet meer verwacht hebben dat Mark Kelson deze oerkracht nog in zich had. Let wel, ik houd evenzeer van wat The Eternal doet; maar dit is echt anders en een mooie uitdaging voor doom adepten die graag een flinke kluif hebben om te doorgronden als ze een album kopen. Bovendien is dit Mark’s debuut als technicus/producer in zijn No. 13 Studio in Melbourne. ‘Illusions Of Silence’ werd gemastered door Endel Rivers die ook de albums van The Eternal de finishing touch geeft.
