HONEYMOON DISEASE: The Transcendence

In 2014 Honeymoon Disease made a noticed entrée with the ‘Fast Love’ single. At least, that’s what the bio says, and indeed it’s a poignant hard rock track, lively and with lush guitar solo, featured on this album as well. Now, the question is if they can meet the high expectations with this first album.
On the cover of this album the Swedish foursome poses like a bunch of ‘hippies meet bikers’. That look fits their sound perfectly, because their groovy hard rock-’n-roll is very seventies, though the voice of Jenna is similar to that of Grace Slick, once member of sixties icons Jefferson Airplane. The simple but effective riffs and, generally speaking, the music in opening song ‘Higher’ sounds incredibly genuine, while these guys and galls weren’t even born then. After that fine song we go fast past two short catchy rockers to ‘Gotta Move’. The highlight of the album: an irresistible catchy driven piece of rock.
Bluesy influences in ‘Too Late’ and even more in the slow ‘Breakup’. Then another great track comes in. Swinging ‘Bellevue Groove’ with dark intro and nice backings, last year’s single announcing the present album, followed by the earlier mentioned ‘Fast Love’. Furthermore ‘Ending’ is catchy too and the well chosen closer has a nice jamming climax.
Great example of retro hard rock, reminding somehow – girls, rock-’n-roll of Joan Jett - with remarkable voice and guitar. A pity this album is so short…

In 2014 maakte Honeymoon Disease een opgemerkte entree met de single ‘Fast Love’. Aldus de bio en het betreft inderdaad een snedige hardrock track, bruisend en met rauwe gitaar solo, die ook op dit debuut staat. Nu is de vraag of ze met dit eerste album de hooggespannen verwachtingen kunnen inlossen.
Op de hoes van dit album ziet het Zweedse viertal eruit als een bende ‘hippies meet bikers’. Dat imago past perfect bij hun geluid, want hun groovy hard rock ’n roll stamt uit de seventies, al vertoont de stem Jenna gelijkenis met die van Grace Slick, ooit bij sixties iconen Jefferson Airplane. De eenvoudige maar effectieve riffs en de muziek in het algemeen van opener ‘Higher’ klinkt bijzonder authentiek, terwijl deze kerels en meiden toen nog niet eens geboren waren. Na dat prima nummer gaan we snel langs twee korte catchy rockers naar ‘Gotta Move’. Dé topper van deze schijf: een onweerstaanbaar catchy gedreven brok ruige rock. Blues invloed in ‘Too Late’ en nog méér in het trage ‘Breakup’. Vervolgens komt nog een sterk nummer. Van lekkere backings en donkere intro voorziene swingende ‘Bellevue Groove’ dat vorig jaar op single uitkwam als opwarmer voor dit album, gevolgd door het eerder vermelde ‘Fast Love’. Verder is ‘Ending’ ook nog catchy en heeft de mooi gekozen afsluiter een lekker jammend sluitstuk.
Prachtig voorbeeld van retro (hard)rock, dat ergens aan Joan Jett doet denken, met opvallend vocaal- en gitaarwerk. Jammer dat de CD zo kort is …
