PRIMAL FEAR: Rulebreaker

Steadfastness graces German Primal Fear. Every two year in January they promptly release a new album and this time it is called ‘Rulebreaker’. After touring for ‘Delivering The Black’ the band started working on fresh material with producer (and band member) Mat Sinner and engineer Jacob Hansen. This time we need to mention two changes in the line-up: old time guitarist Tom Naumann is now back in the studio as well and behind the drums we find the Italian Francesco Jovino. It gave the band extra energy to come up with a great album.
Of course the sound of these Germans remains very recognizable: super riffs, fervent solos and the mighty voice of Ralf Scheepers. If you are a fan of Judas Priest, you can always count on Primal Fear to find a band of their ilk. However they do it so well, that you enjoy every moment, in despite of clichés and a feeling of having heard before. Thus ‘Angels Of Mercy’ kicks off ultra tight, whit Scheepers who soon goes to the highest regions. The dark backing vocals sound profound. The venomous sung title track reminds a bit of AC/DC, while the juicy sung ‘The Devil In Me’ appears to be epic and a bit akin to ‘Heaven & Hell’. In brief, you are at the right address for classic heavy metal with balls with Primal Fear. They use the benefits of three guitar players abundantly, since there is an opulence of amazing solos. In the middle one can find an epic song of eleven minutes long. ‘We Walk Without Fear’ is relished with piano and symphonic arrangements and of course Ralf is brilliant during the sensitive moments as well. After the fetching, fast songs time has come for a ballad with ‘The Sky Is Burning’, before going to the finale with the energetic and high-pitched sung ‘Raving Mad’. This is an album that instantly gives you a good temper; you can’t help but smiling.

Standvastigheid siert het Duitse Primal Fear. Trouw brengen ze elke twee jaar in januari een nieuw album uit en ditmaal werd dit ‘Rulebreaker’ gedoopt. Na het toeren voor ‘Delivering The Black’ ging de band met producer (en bandlid) Mat Sinner en opnametechnicus Jacob Hansen aan de slag om vers materiaal in te blikken. Ditmaal dienen we wel twee veranderingen in de bezetting mee te geven: gitarist Tom Naumann is nu ook terug in de studio en achter de drums zit sinds 2015 de Italiaan Francesco Jovino. Het gaf de band extra kracht om een fantastisch album te maken.
Natuurlijk blijft de sound van de Duitsers heel herkenbaar: straffe riffs, vurige solo’s en de machtige stem van Ralf Scheepers. Wanneer je fan bent van Judas Priest, kan je altijd bij Primal Fear terecht. De band doet dit echter zo goed dat je geniet van elk moment, ondanks clichés en een gevoel van déjà entendu. Retestrak wordt ‘Angels Of Mercy’ dan ook ingezet, met Scheepers die meteen in de hoogste regionen verkeert. De duistere koortjes klinken gedecideerd. Het venijnig gezongen titelnummer doet wat aan AC/DC denken, terwijl het smeuïg gezongen ‘The Devil In Me’ episch is en wel een beetje gespiekt heeft bij ‘Heaven & Hell’. Kortom, bij Primal Fear zit je goed voor classic heavy metal. Er wordt volop gebruik gemaakt van de aanwezigheid van drie gitaristen, want de formidabele solo’s vliegen ons om de oren. In het midden prijkt een epische song van elf minuten. ‘We Walk Without Fear’ wordt opgesmukt met piano en symfonische arrangementen en natuurlijk vaart Ralf met vlag en wimpel doorheen de gevoelige passages zonder moeite. Naast de aanstekelijke, snelle tracks is het tijd voor een ballade met ‘The Sky Is Burning’, vooraleer men nog een laatste keer energiek tekeer gaat met tergend hoge zang tijdens ‘Raving Mad’. Een album dat je meteen in goede stemming brengt en een glimlach van oor tot oor veroorzaakt.
