FROZEN OCEAN: The Prowess Of Dormition (MCD)

Frozen Ocean happens to be the one-man-project of multi-instrumentalist Vaarwel, hailing from Moscow. Since 2005 he has numerous releases on his name and now he adds another one with the MCD ‘The Prowess Of Dormition’ (length: 25 minutes), being signed by Atomic Witchcraft.
The man gets his inspiration from nature around the capital, but also derives ideas from the fantasy world of Tove Jansson and the endless universe. He does it with atmospheric black metal that mainly reminds us of Summoning and Falkenbach. The four lengthy songs – of which ‘Det Siste Snofallet’ happens to be instrumental – sound epic and are interlarded with melodic leads on guitars and keyboards, while vocals are blackened screams. The whole sound is rather gritty, but the melancholic and melodic elements in the music prevail. Thus ‘The Orowess Of Dormintion’ appears to be a spontaneous belch out of the wilderness we can appreciate.

Frozen Ocean is het eenmansproject van de uit Moskou afkomstige multi-instrumentalist Vaarwel. Hij heeft sinds 2005 ontelbare releases op zijn naam staan en voegt daar met de MCD ‘The Prowess Of Dormition’ (lengte: 25 minuten) een volgende aan toe, nu getekend door Atomic Witchcraft.
De man laat zijn inspiratie de vrije loop in de natuur rond de hoofdstad en haalt tevens inspiratie uit de fantasiewereld va Tove Jansson en het oneindige universum. Dat doet hij in atmosferische black metal die ons nog het meest doet denken aan Summoning en Falkenbach. De vier lange songs – waarvan ‘Det Siste Snofallet’ een instrumentaal is – klinken episch, worden dooraderd met melodieuze leads op gitaar, op keyboards en de zang is zwartgeblakerd. Het geheel klinkt vrij gruizig, maar het melancholieke en melodieuze element in de muziek overheerst. ‘The Prowess Of Dorminition’ is dan ook een spontane oprisping uit de Russische wildernis die we kunnen waarderen.
