It is like Whitfield Crane of Ugly Kid Joe lately said: “Those who are still active in the rock scène these days, while being familiar with the lucrative heydays, they surely do it for the love of musicâ€. Take Tony Clarkin of Magnum as example. On and on he starts eagerly composing new stuff, right after the finishing touch to the previous album. We bet he is already thinking now about the next one. Following on the release of ’Escape From The Shadow Garden’ (2014) he penned no less than 25 songs; thirteen of them were recorded. One can find ten songs on the regular version of ‘Sacred Blood “Divine†Lies’, three are put as bonus tracks on the digipak version (together with two new video clips).
Magnum is a band you can buy blindly when you are a fan. The band will never go into unexpected directions, but they sound modest and solid. The characteristic vocals of Bob Catley and the eminent guitar skills of Tony Clarkin are the main features of the band. Although… wait. Quite many songs on the new album are featuring keyboards and string arrangements, while Clarkin seldom let himself go as lead guitarist. Actually, that is something I said about the latter part of the previous album as well. Yet it is above all a smooth rocking record, kicking off with the very strong title track. It proves that Magnum has the finger on the pulse of this current world lyrically. Catley sings passionate, at the peek of his range and a wild guitar solo cleaves through the pumping rhythms. Plump and stamping is ‘Crazy Old Mothers’, but it is more of a thoughtful lesson too. ‘Gypsy Queen’ happens to be beautiful and dedicated to St Petersburg, since Clarkin was deeply moved when visiting this city. Next songs all lean on smooth pumping rhythms and in the case of ‘Your Dreams Won’t Die’ quite languid. Well, some of them you sing along spontaneously. Thus, nothing new under the sun, although the band claims to be doing something else during occluding track ‘Don’t Cry Baby’. Indeed, the drums have that dry eighties sound and the production might be a bit different, but all in all this is ultimately Magnum. It is a pity that the guitar solo at the end is faded out soon. I’d like them see composing an extra lengthy track again one day, preferable with loads of guitar solos… but well, I guess the fans will surely enjoy ‘Sacred Blood “Divine†Lies’. Everything you like about Magnum is there in galore. That means predictable, yet safe.

Het is zoals Whitfield Crane van Ugly Kid Joe onlangs zei: “Wie nu nog actief is in de rockwereld, terwijl hij de lucratieve tijden meegemaakt heeft, doet dat puur uit liefde voor muziekâ€. Neem nu gitarist Tony Clarkin van Magnum. Nog steeds slaat hij onverwijld aan het componeren wanneer een vorig album ingeblikt is. We kunnen er dus gif op innemen dat hij nu al vooruit denkt. Volgend op de release van ’Escape From The Shadow Garden’ (2014) pende hij zo alweer 25 nieuwe songs, waarvan er dertien opgenomen werden. Tien stuks vullen de reguliere versie van ‘Sacred Blood “Divine†Lies’, drie zijn er als bonustracks beland (samen met twee nieuwe videoclips) bij het digipak.
Magnum is een band die je blind kunt kopen wanneer je er fan van bent. De band zal nooit verrassende muzikale wendingen nemen, maar klinkt immer degelijk en solide. Centraal staat de karakteristieke stem van Bob Catley alsook het eminente gitaarwerk van Tony Clarkin. Alhoewel… ik vind dat vele songs op het nieuwe album nogal veel door toetsen en strijkersarrangementen beheerst worden en Clarkin zich als sologitarist slechts mondjesmaat laat gaan, een euvel dat zich in de tweede helft van de vorige plaat ook al aandiende. Toch is het vooral ook een rockende plaat, die van start gaat met het sterke titelnummer. Het bewijst dat Magnum tekstueel de vinger aan de pols heeft in de huidige wereld. Catley levert een passionele prestatie (zelfs op het randje van zijn bereik) en een scheurende gitaarsolo doorklieft de pompende ritmes. Log en stompend is ‘Crazy Old Mothers’ al meer een beschouwende les. Mooi is het aan Sint Petersburg opgedragen ‘Gypsy Queen’, want Clarkin is diep onder de indruk van die stad. De volgende songs leunen allemaal op pompende ritmes en zijn in het geval van ‘Your Dreams Won’t Die’ nogal gezapig, maar wel ga je ze spontaan mee neuriën. Niets nieuws onder de zon dus, al beweert men bij afsluiter ‘Don’t Cry Baby’ van wel. Ja, de drums hebben een droge jaren tachtig sound en de productie lijkt een beetje anders, maar verder is dit allemaal op en top Magnum. Wel spijtig dat die gitaarsolo op het laatste veel te vlug weggemixt wordt. Ik zou ze toch nog eens een extra lange track willen horen schrijven en dan liefst met veel gitaarsolo’s… maar met ‘Sacred Blood “Divine†Lies’ zullen de fans ongetwijfeld ook tevreden zijn. Alles waar je van houdt bij Magnum is immers weer in geruime mate aanwezig. Dat betekent voorspelbaarheid, maar ook zekerheid.
