EREB ALTOR: Blot Ilt Taut

The epic Viking metal from Bathory has been a source of inspiration for many and Quorthon has a legendary status. The Swede is generally considered an echelon of the genre by its fellow musicians in the scene. Think about a band like Twilight Of The Gods, but also Ereb Altor never hided that they founded this side project of Isole as tribute to Bathory. They craft these influences in amazing compositions and the 2015 release ‘Nattramn’ happened to be another perfect example of that.
From time to time Ereb Altor played a Bathory cover live, but slowly the wish from the fans grew for having some studio registrations of Ereb Altor’s fine interpretations from the musical legacy of the musician who sadly passed away much too early. This will now be possible with ‘Blot – Ilt – Taut’ (old Swedish for ‘Blood Fire Death’ which is obviously a Bathory album). It will only be released on vinyl and via digital channels. Thus not on CD. Get that ancient turntable from the attic, since the guys have done this job in an outstanding manner! Key question in this respect is: what do they cover from this rather huge oeuvre? Well, Ereb Altor selected songs from four albums, originally released between 1987 and 1991. These are seen as the best works from the band, but one song comes from ‘Scandinavian Metal Attack’, a disc with various artists from 1984. Bathory was featured with two songs on that record. Ereb Altor brought the songs to a higher level. They are not just imitated, but transformed into proper Ereb Altor songs, with – let’s be honest – way much better vocals and production.
The nine minutes long ‘A Fine Day To Die’ comes from the album ‘Blood Fire Death’ and sneaks nearly humble and quiescent into the room with plucking guitars and solemn clean chants. The outburst with ferocious scream is twice as effective. Powerful clean vocals – a trademark of the band – lead towards very beautiful guitar solos, a truly epic experience. The atmospheric centrepiece nicely contrasts with the vigorous guitar leads and rawer parts. Introvert melancholy is featured in the short ‘Song To Hall Up High’ and herewith we stay two songs long with ‘Hammerheart’, since the sturdy rocking ‘Home Of Once Brave’ comes from that classic album as well. As we expected, the oldest song ‘The Return Of Darkness And Evil’ appears to be the most raw and rudimentary. Even a bit Venom alike and very fast. They slacken down pace again in the compelling ‘Woman Of Dark Desires’ with clean as well as creepy raucous vocals, but again magnificent guitar skills. Finally they open a can of most popular songs. ‘Twilight Of The Gods’ and ‘Blood Fire Death’ can generally be considered as classics amongst the metal crowd and these songs are both played with genuine spirit. Quorthon would have been happy with this amazing tribute to him.

De epische Viking metal van Bathory is voor velen een inspiratiebron geweest en Quorthon heeft een legendarische status. De Zweed wordt door medemuzikanten algemeen beschouwd als echelon in het genre. Denk maar aan een band als Twilight Of The Gods, maar natuurlijk ook aan Ereb Altor. Ze hebben nooit onder stoelen of banken gestoken dat zij dit zijproject van Isole hebben opgericht als eerbetoon aan Bathory. Deze invloeden verwerken ze trouwens in prachtige composities en het in 2015 uitgebrachte ‘Nattramn’ was daar weer een perfect voorbeeld van.
Live werd er al eens een Bathory cover gespeeld, maar langzaam maar zeker steeg ook de vraag van de fans om plaatwerk te kunnen kopen van Ereb Altor’s knappe interpretaties van het muzikale erfgoed van de veel te vroeg gestorven muzikant. Dat wordt nu mogelijk gemaakt met ‘Blot – Ilt – Taut’ (oud Zweeds voor ‘Blood Fire Death’ en dat is uiteraard een album van Bathory). Dit werk verschijnt enkel op vinyl en via digitale kanalen. Geen CD dus. Haal die oude platendraaier maar van de zolder, want de heren hebben zich op een uitmuntende wijze van hun taak gekweten. Hamvraag nummer één is natuurlijk: hoe kies je wat je gaat coveren uit dit aanzienlijke oeuvre? Ereb Altor maakte een keuze uit de vier albums, verschenen tussen 1987 en 1991. Deze worden ook beschouwd als de beste werken van de band, maar er is zelfs nog een uitstapje naar ‘Scandinavian Metal Attack’, een verzamelaar uit 1984 waarop twee Bathory songs prijkten. Ereb Altor heeft de songs naar een hoger niveau getild. Ze worden niet klakkeloos nagespeeld, maar getransformeerd naar heuse Ereb Altor songs, met – eerlijk is eerlijk – veel betere zangpartijen en productie.
Het negen minuten durende ‘A Fine Day To Die’ komt van ‘Blood Fire Death’ en sluipt haast nederig en verstild de kamer binnen met tokkelende gitaren en plechtige cleane zang. De uitval met woeste schreeuw is er des te effectiever door. De krachtige cleane zang waar de band een patent op heeft leidt naar erg knappe gitaarsolo’s waar het epische genoegen ten top stijgt. Het atmosferische middenstuk contrasteert aangenaam met het scheurende gitaarwerk en ruwere zangstukken. Ingetogenheid staat centraal in het korte ‘Song To Hall Up High’ en hiermee verblijven we twee nummers op ‘Hammerheart’, want ook het rockende ‘Home Of Once Brave’ is afkomstig van die klassieker. Zoals verwacht klinkt het oudste nummer ‘The Return Of Darkness And Evil’ het ruwst, een beetje Venomachtig zelfs en erg snel. Trager gaat het eraan toe in het slepende ‘Woman Of Dark Desires’ met afwisselend ruwe en cleane zang, maar weer schitterend gitaarwerk. Ten slotte trekken we een blik bekendste songs open. ‘Twilight Of The Gods’ en ‘Blood Fire Death’ mogen algemeen als gemeengoed beschouwd worden voor de metalfan en deze worden met (h)eerlijke overtuiging gebracht. Quorthon zou tevreden zijn met deze fantastische hommage aan hem.
